Hi there, my son is 11 and will be leaving primary school in July. He has been asked to write a speech for this years Thorn King after his name was put forward. (Same role as Rose Queen). This year will be the first time his school will be having a Thorn King....it's basically done on a voting system whereby they write a speech with reasons why the school pupils should pick him a such.......any ideas where I can start in terms of helping him, what he should/shouldn't include in the speech Thank you x

I've never heard of Thorn King / Rose Queen but my DS had to give a speech to get the pupils to vote for him to be house captain, which I assume is similar?

Can he talk about his memories from his time at the school, maybe tell a funny story? His favourite school trip, favourite lesson, worst ever school lunch etc. Keep it short. Remind him to speak clearly and slowly and look up from his notes.

Also, the results of these things are fairly random IMO (DS won mainly because he has two siblings at the school who told their friends to vote for him!), so make sure he understands that he might not win and he should go and say 'well done' to the winner.

Never heard of a rose queen or thorn king!
We have house captains though.
