Tips to help 4 year old stop thumb sucking

Hi, my 4 year old DD is addicted to thumb sucking and hair twirling which I am keen to help her stop for a variety of reasons (one of which being it is driving me nuts!!!!). She does it day and night but most often when she is tired, in the car, watching tv or in bed. It was a godsend as a toddler as she was great at self settling but she is starting school in September and I want her to stop before then. I have tried painting her nail with the nail biting stuff but she gets really upset as she can taste it when eating finger foods and it's disgusting. I am also not keen on introducing a dummy as a friend has advised me as I believe that will just create another dependency. So basically I want any other advice or tips on how to help her stop. Thanks!
