Year 2 reading

My 7 year old is now on 48 page chapter books for his reading in school. Am I still supposed to listen to him reading the whole thing or can I get him to read it himself and ask me if he gets stuck? We would normally break up the 32pp ones over 2-3 days but 48pp is a lot of words

Do a mixture of him reading to you and reading himself. You can always ask him a few questions about what he's read (a gentle chat not an interrogation! ) to check he has understood or he can read a page and you read a page, etc. Just mark in his reading record the pages he's read aloud and those he read to himself.

Most Year 2s are capable of some independent reading and it'll definitely be expected in Year 3!

I still listen to my Year 2 son, who's on similar books. He rarely needs help nowadays, so listening to his reading is easier because I don't also need to watch him. So often DS sits in the kitchen and reads to me while I am washing up, making dinner, doing laundry etc.

I stopped listening to my older children read around year 3 or 4 and both of their reading deteriorated as a result of not reading aloud. It took a year or two to recover (and neither now enjoy reading, they read only because they have to).

So I am hoping to keep reading aloud going with my 7 year old as long as possible.

I would only listen to a few pages but would strongly encourage checking word meaning (I'm a teacher and it still shocks me the vocabulary some children don't know but don't question)
