Elbow and knee pads.

I'm kitting my 3.5 year old out for a balance bike. Called local bike shop to ask about their stock. Helmet- all fine. He said in his experience- 6 nieces and nephews, elbow and knee pads are never used. Kids might topple off a slow moving bike and graze a hand. They slow themselves down and don't go fast enough to injure themselves where pads might protect them.

Are they a necessity for a bike?

Ive never used elbow or knee pads however we did use gloves because as the bike shop said it's often the hands. The ones we had were padded at the palm and also very good for climbing.
