Am I feeding too much?

Hi there,

I have a six and a half month baby who is currently on 4 feeds of 8oz a day (take a couple of ounces) with a night feed of 4oz.

Is this too much?

I ask as I just read an Ella's Kitchen guide and it said baby should be having 17oz of milk a day ShockShockShock DS is having much more than that!

Thanking you in advance

My 6.5 mo is still on 5 7 or 8oz bottles in 24 hours. If I try to cut down he wakes up for 2 night feeds rather than the normal 1.

I had him weighed yesterday and he is 21lbs Shock but the hv said he will continue to drop milk as we increase food so i think it'll just take time

What you are feeding sounds ok, it depends on baby's weight though. There's an NHS formula for weight/milk amount guidelines if you google it. Is baby on solids yet?

He's having a couple of ice cube sized bits a day and a bit of porridge.

Since starting the porridge he has dropped a couple of ounces so I guess it does take time.

Thank you - I couldn't believe it when I read the guide.....!

What about food? If baby is having no food I'd say 24-28 oz is normal. Once you are weaning (which would be where Ella's Kitchen is coming from) 17oz is probably a fairly normal amount of formula to settle down to along with 2-3 small meals a day.

Im under the impression that for formula it is approx 2.5oz per lb of body weight.

Obviously as you wean milk will gradually be replaced with food.

Cross post! Don't worry about overfeeding at the levels your talking about. Babies can be so different week on week anyway.

JaxingJump · 04/05/2017 10:26

He'll freak you out in 2 weeks by dropping to 10oz a day for a weekGrin

At work we go by the formula of their weight in KG multiplied by 150 and that's how many mls they should be having in 24 hours (so then divide it by 30 to convert it to ounces instead of mls).

So if your baby is about 6.5 kgs (14lbs-ish) OP then I wouldn't worry about how much he's having. Just go with his flow.

Thank you all

That seems a lot but I have no idea! My baby is 5 months and takes about 25 ounces a day!

Babydreaming · 05/05/2017 16:06

As long as his weight isn't loads more than his height then I'm sure it's fine, he'll take what he needs!
