anyone else ever dealt successfully with child who just will not wear pants?

ds can pee in toilet and tell me when etc..so okay in house (wears nothing!) but will not wear pants and really screams, fights and refuses to wear them!!
...have resorted to pull ups just so we can go outside but knows they are just nappies by another name........arrgghhh!

anyone ever overcame this? and how???

How about trousers with no pants?

Ooh or you can get little tiny boxers - any better?

ScottishThistle · 13/03/2007 11:23

Have you tried taking him to the shop & letting him choose his own pants, he may love Spiderman pants!

suzycreamcheese · 13/03/2007 11:28

flamesparrow...he wont wear trouser without, have asked, pleaded, etc..results in huge screaming match...even threats of not going out dont do it...

scottish thistle..he choose his own pirate pants and combat pants..and still screams at the sight of them and declares 'i want cold bum mum'

my normal cool is evaporating fast...my only other idea is to stay in over easter hols til it sinks in but not much fun for anyone...

as he knows how to pee in loo i do think he can grasp this...am i a fool?

thanks for replies ladies..

DD would looooooooove spiderman pants

I thought that I might be being too optimistic there suzy I don't have any decent advise - only done it so far with a girl, so you can just chuck a dress on em and if they don't want knickers its not such an issue!

suzycreamcheese · 13/03/2007 11:40

hey, i'd love spiderman pants too!

have never seen boxers for kids, his dad wears them so will try and find them...

have to run, picking up nappy clad nearly 3 year old from pre school..

Have you tried rewarding him just for wearing the pants (sticker chart, chocolate buttons?)? DS was very reluctant to put on pants or pullups on the first day of potty training, so we resorted to bribery. It did work.

Lio · 13/03/2007 11:51

We did it with chocolate. 'If you put on your pants we'll go downstairs and get you two chocolate buttons. If you don't like the pants you can take them off again [admit that second bit was a gamble] after that.' Put on pants crying, got downstairs, had choc, big praise and compliments on his pants from my mum and dad, I disappeared while they put on his trousers...

I know we were a bit lucky that it actually worked but maybe worth a try? LOTS of compliments, and we went through quite a lot of choc buttons too, we are now down to one dose of bribery choc a day (a chocolate coin) after tea as a 'well done' for doing all his wees and poos in the right place.

I've got a feeling M&S do kids boxers

ScottishThistle · 13/03/2007 15:09

I agree, try bribery!

H&M & Next sell boys boxers.

Kelly1978 · 13/03/2007 15:11

next do spiderman pants. Maybe you should let him go without pants for a while?
I took the dkids to mothercare to choose their first pants.
ds has had boxer shorts and loves them. He gets rather attached to pants unfortunately. He used to have an obsession with football pants now it is chicken run or something in bright blue. I have to keep washing them for him.

suzycreamcheese · 14/03/2007 09:08

thanks for the messages...apologies have had internet connection troubles!!!
thanks for boxers tip, will be heading there shortly..

have cupboard full of chocolate buttons, and we made our own sticker chart full of pictures of all the rewards to come when wearing pants..(trip to toy store, chocolate etc..and also have choice of stickers stars, sea creatures, dinosaurs)...

when i actually try to bribe him with chocolate, he says he doesn't like that either...

i would give up, stop stressing etc and try again later but last week he was peeing in toilet and telling me he needed it so sort of think he is ready but just resisting change

....(resisting change is a BIG thing with him, he still talks of clothes and socks that dont fit, gets upset at photos where he is wearing said item and constantly refuses to wear new clothes)...so the transition to pants i knew would be difficult...really desperate for ideas / advice .....

i have a similar problem ds is fine with no pants or trousers on around the house and is able to go to the toilet etc.But as soon as i put him in his pants he wees he just doesnt seem to get that its not a nappy-any ideas what i could do?

suzycreamcheese · 14/03/2007 09:56

mum2sam..wish i did have some ideas...

..we are only at the early stages of using loo..but problem seems similar; if there is anything round his bum then it will be treated as a nappy..and i cant get the pants on, even for him to pee into!

...actually have only had pair of pants on once after mega struggle with real tears and i cant face that again ...(thought if they were on he would not bother after a bit...wrong)!

We got mini boxers from matalan and DS1 loves them.

What about putting the pants on over a pull up when you are out? Have you tried that?

suzycreamcheese · 14/03/2007 10:06

mumofmonsters...will try it, he just freaks at the sight of the things ...

....i wonder if its what they represent..
and he repeats our mantra of who wears pants (everyone) and that only babies wear nappies!

i even got him singing 'pants, pants, pants, pants PANTS.. wonderful pants' to tune of SPAM! but still freaks when they are produced to wear..

have stuck them on all his soft toys to introduce familiarity but backfires as he says they can keep them!

..gimme strength..

What sort of pants does daddy have in his drawer? the only thing that really worked to stop ds1 pooing in his was to buy pants like daddy's. And we made up a sond called 'Daddy Pants' to the tune of 'Fingermouse'.

Flamesparrow · 14/03/2007 16:34

Lovin the pants songs

colditz · 14/03/2007 17:55

DADDY PANTS! do dooo doodo do dooo
DADDY PANTS! do dooo do doo dooooo
DADDY PANTS! do dooo doodo do dooo
Ev'ryone's talkin' 'bout

DADDY PANTS!

suzycreamcheese · 14/03/2007 20:13

hey colditz...song's a good un!
..am glad am not the only one doing this sort of stuff...
....and it does make me laugh when he shouts out 'Wonderful pants' in aisle of supermarket..
but so far will only wear them on his head!
dont fancy him pooing in them but hey, at least they are on the right body part!!

dad wears boxers so i will be following up the tips earlier on where to get them and fingers crossed it does the trick....
