Just a woohoo, feel the fluffy goodness kind of message

For any disposable user havin a look - now is the time real nappies are being promoted across the country... if you want to know if there is an event near you then ask on here and someone will know something (will add the list later today).

Cloth really isn't that scary... fits under most normal clothes, disposable liners means you are just throwing poo away - not washing it, from as little as 2 extra washloads a week, saves money, and most of all - it looks sooooo fluffy

Let us tempt you into the world of cloth....

(Oh and if you are reeeeeeeeeally desperate for the disposable, one lucky person can have my size 4 easy up sample!)

giggle duplo!!

hunkerismunkerless · 12/03/2007 23:12

I've just won six months' free disps though.

Maybe if they're still in nappies after that though, eh?

Flamesparrow · 12/03/2007 23:14

Ooh how'd you win that? Well done

Hunker, donate them to your local hospital and go cloth...

Flamesparrow · 12/03/2007 23:15

Or am I believing what I read too much again

Flamesparrow · 12/03/2007 23:15

Nah, get the hospital using cloth

hunkerismunkerless · 12/03/2007 23:15

MAC, no. I work full time, am moving house, have two in nappies and no drying space. When I am more sorted...maybe. Till then, even if I donated them, they'd be in landfill, right? Might as well be the fragrant Hunkerboys who fill 'em!

FS, I won them on MN

hunkerismunkerless · 12/03/2007 23:16

My local hospital won't use cloth. My local council won't give any kind of subsidy. Doesn't believe the figures add up.

colditz · 12/03/2007 23:17

Ok

Right

I have a 1 year old

Is it worth laying out for nappies for him? How much could this cost me? what are the best for older babies/toddlers? Are terries actually any good or do I need shaped ones?

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:18

Hunker - shame, you'd love 'em :-)

I work full time too (and had DS in the office with me, in cloth, for about a year) but only one DC and I'm not moving house. And I have drying space.

Soooo... I know where you're coming from.

Still, have you tried Fluffles? Or some of the MT pockets? They don't take up any drying space, really, and you can get the same size to fit two DC

Awww you can't blame me for trying, huh!

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:20

Colditz,

  1. Yes.
  2. About £200 less than sposies for another 18 months.
  3. It depends on your drying space, baby's skin, childcare... Flame seems to be NOT going to bed so I'll hand you over...
  4. You don't NEED shaped but they're easier to use, and a darn site more fun.

i converted when ds1 was 1!
I buy mostly second hand as it keeps the money in the hands of the mothers then, where it should be, plus second hand cloth has already been pre washed a million times so is nice and absorbant, providing it has been done properly.
you can also grab loads of different ones relatively cheaply and try before you commit too much.

But it is nice to get a nice new glowing fluffy new nappy too.

I would probably have bought brand new if i could have afforded to, but i couldnt.

colditz · 12/03/2007 23:22

his skin is frankly awful. I figure he isn't a heavy wetter, and his skin is so bad a change him every 2 hours anyway, so am wasting a lot of nappies.

I am in Leicestershire - apparently they pilot a nappy scheme here!

colditz · 12/03/2007 23:23

he has constant nappy rash - i worry that swapping him over will make this worse!

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:23

Colditz - no question then, drop the sposies. If you've got drying space I would HIGHLY recommend Bambineos (or other bamboo nappies) for babes with skin problems.

hunkerismunkerless · 12/03/2007 23:24

I tried a Tots Bots when DS1 was little and DS2 wore it a couple of times, but it leaked (and yes I prewashed it loads). Was an orange rainbow one.

Haven't bought any more because I can't afford to shell out on them if they're no good, plus I have a clothes horse up in the living room and no other drying space.

When I move, I will have a utility nook in my kitchen. I might get a couple then, so DS2 can wear them on days I'm with him. DS1, I doubt would wear one and I want him to wear his blinking "favourite Thomas pants" (so he says!) on something other than his head... [sigh]

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:25

It depends on what's causing the NR.

Many sposies set it off with their chemicals.

Bamboo is naturally antibacterial and antifungal, hence v good at stopping the build up of what causes much NR.

The nappy area also gets more airflow which is much better for the skin - not tied up in plastic (which is also potentially risky for little boys and their future fertility).

colditz · 12/03/2007 23:26

Ok

I will try to get hold of a few to trial them. I shouldn't need too many, should I? I have a (gasp) tumble drier, shamingly my motive is financial, plus half my wheelie bin is nappies! I recycle everything else.

What should I wash them in? Would Tesco Non bio cut it?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/03/2007 23:27

stick him incloth and wool with a silk liner- personally, atthe risk of sounding pervy, itsounds lovely to me! lol
his bum will be fine.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/03/2007 23:28

i tumble when i cant get them outside as ds rips them off the airer and throws them all around then the dog stashes them in her bed- lol
i also use tesco non bio.

you have no excuse!!

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:29

Hunker,

Tots cotton nappies are pretty good and if they leaked there's a reason - wrong wrap, not quite fitted right, and so on.

If you do decide to take the plunge again just drop in and ask for some more advice.

Honestly, we wouldn't be doing this if they didn't work. We're not super-eco-hippies who wash our babies clothes after each change because their nappies leak.

Real nappies, used right:

  • leak less than sposies,
  • are more comfy
  • give better protection to the lower back
  • are better for genital health
  • are often better for baby's skin
  • save parents a fortune
  • and, as an afterthought, are better for the planet.

colditz · 12/03/2007 23:29

I'll get some terries first, then if I can't cope I'll find another use for them. Probably as 4-year-old's-drink-moppers.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/03/2007 23:30

dont forget help good hip development and are too darn cute!!

makesachange · 12/03/2007 23:31

Colditz, tumbling is fine. If you can, line or airer when poss or perhaps tumble 1/2 way and put in airing cupboard.

IF you wash every day AND tumble every day it uses about the same amount of energy as sposies... without the landfill. So even that's better than sposies.

Anything else you can do to line dry is therefore a bonus.

Tesco non bio is fine.

Trial nappies at your service if required.

Lady is right - silk liners are the BEEEES for NR.

hunkerismunkerless · 12/03/2007 23:32

I know, MAC, I know. I don't have leaks with disps though, and now I've won these free ones...well, I don't need to be shelling out on cloth just atm - will wait till we've moved - discovered on Saturday we'll have an airing cupboard as well as a utility nook, so it's looking more likely
