Tips for helping DH post vasectomy

Hello Mumsnetters!

DH has booked in for the opp in May (at last) and just wondering if you guys had any top tips for helping support him through it in practical ways?!

Particularly after any advice on the best erherm post-vasectomy underwear.

Honestly, there isn't much you need to do at all. He might need an ice pack to help with mild swelling and some mild pain meds, but within a couple of days he'll be totally fine. It's no big deal.

It a packet of paracetamol.
Take day off to drive him home.

As above. It's easy, all they have to do it rest, I was expecting DH to have balls like aubergines but it never happened. Compared to giving birth it was easy...(my other kindness was not to mention this fact on the day).

As you can imagine he is slightly dreading it and feel as if I ought to compensate by buying fancy pants or some kind of reading material! GREAT TO HEAR it's easy and relatively painless.

Was reading a blog from Mens Health - he was so traumatised by the whole experience you would have thought he'd had the whole lot taken off!!!

Ha ha Nellythegoat - I have already mentioned the 'it's not nearly so bad as giving birth' line. EEK!

Dp had his done in February. It was completely fine, few days of paracetamol and he was back to normal.
The only thing I would do to prepare is to make sure he shaves his balls. My dp didn't even think about it and they stuck the dressing down onto lots of hair which was painful to take off.

DH had no issues. He took a day off work and took paracetamol.

The stories he was told before hand by idiot co workers were unbelievable. I've yet to hear from anyone IRL anything but a straightforward outcome.

He'll need tight pants - try trunk style one size too small as he'll really appreciate no jiggling so possibly he should wear two pairs (though allow for the dressing for the first day).

If he is in a level of pain which is not kept in check by standard doses of OTC painkillers, or if there is heat/redness/anything exuding, then go straight to a doctor (might need ABs)

Keep small DC off his lap for the first 48 hours or so.

And don't abandon other contraception until there has been a proper 'all clear' from the tests (most providers require two clear ones). This can take a disappointingly long time...

yes have heard SO MANY horror stories usually involving aubergines.

Paracetamol for a few days, my DH barely mentioned it, he was back at work the next day.

GREAT TO HEAR it's easy and relatively painless. This line made me chuckle...under NO circumstances mention the phrase 'relatively painless' to your DH, he just won't get it.

Well, being serious, one in ten men (source NHS) can expect the serious complications (eg PVPS, haemotoma, granuloma) and of course PVPS is essentially untreatable. I'm not sure how many men have the less serious complications (infection, excessive bruising, or pain which does not prevent day to day activity or which lasts less than 3 months).

So no, lots of men won't 'get it'

My husband did unfortunately get awful swelling and bruising. He was in a lot of pain for the first few weeks, and he is pretty stoic so it must have been bad. Has suffered since with PVPS.

It wasn't a doddle for DH. He was in considerable discomfort afterwards, and had an eye-watering level of bruising (yes, aubergines ). There wasn't anything wrong though, he was just not one of those who was lucky enough to find it easy immediately afterwards.

DH was okay but had an infected wound which got a bit ouchy. Needed 3 days of antibiotics and was okay after that.
M and S pants are mega expensive so I went for Asda trunks.
