Saving money whilst on maternity

I am on maternity leave and I wanted some tips on doing free stuff with my DS1 and DS2. DS2 is only 10 weeks so he will be in a sling when we are out and about.

DS1 is 19 months so needs more stimulation. I did tnot baby classes with DS1 when on maternity leave with him but I don't want to commit to a full term so I will take them to play and go sessions instead.

There is Messy play at local school which is only £2 a session.

I take them both to the local parks and will be taking them to other parks. I also take him to the library and to feed the ducks etc.

I wanted to get more ideas of free stuff to keep him entertained.

Can anybody help?

Often libraries do free bounce n rhyme and if you have any playcentres near you they often do free stay & play or music sessions.

If you have any big pet stores near you it can be fun to look at the animals together.

Local sure start centres are great. Mine does something almost every day of the week, and asks for a £1 donation to cover drinks and snacks.

Look for church-run toddlers groups - similarly cheap.

Parks are good. Get a scooter for more hours of fun in parks.

Museums and art galleries. Even if the toddler doesn't understand much, you can point out things for her to look at. And it's more interesting for you than endless toddler related things.

Garden centres. My toddler loves running around shops and it keeps me on my toes too as I try to stop her from breaking anything. Also they often have coffee shops and soft play areas within the garden center.

Bake stuff at home.

Look for local parent/toddler groups that are usually free or minimal cost (and PAYG) - try church halls, village halls, community centres, Surestart (if you still have it), sports centres, NCT ( you don't have to be a member, and IME they are not all landed gentry!), libraries. Good luck! These type of groups are as much for the mums as the children.

Invest in a flask and a supply of value custard creams to have out and about eg on a bench / in swimming pool viewing areas - I saved a fortune in cafe costs that way!!
