Cant get temp down ....

Daughter had a temp of 38.3C at 2ish so gave her calpol, then at half 5 she was really lothargic and hot so took temp and it was 38.8C so gave her calpol again allbeit 20 mins too soon, just taken it again as no improvement and its now 40.2C , cant give nurofen so what do I do now??

Hi OP,

I would take her to see Ooh GP at that age with that temp. Especially if she is lethargic with it. I hope she feels better soon.

To be honest in that situation (medicine administered, temp increasing, lethargic baby) I would probably call for medical advice.

I take it you've stripped her down to keep her as cool as possible?

Definitely OOH with a temp that high! Do you have any idea of the cause of the temperature? Ear infection/tonsillitis?

Strip down to vest (completely stripping and/or washing down with cold water can be counterproductive). If she is lethargic and paracetamol (Calpol) is not touching it I think a call in to 111 is called for.

I second 111... when my son's temp used to go that high and didn't respond to calpol (kids ibuprofen usually works better) it generally meant an infection somewhere.

Been there. I'd not bother with 111 - at that temp, not responding to medicine and her age she'll be sent to OOH or possible A&E. Just go straight there.

I take it she's stripped to just nappy?

Hope all is ok.

That's quite a high temp. Personally I'd try a dose of nurofen before taking to A&E. take her temp again about 30-90 minutes later. If not close to normal then def a&e.

She cant take nurofen, got a same day apt at 7.30 thanks guys i always worry that they will just say virus and look at me like ive wasted their time. Like they did the time she couldnt breathe and we got an ambulance for the dr at a n e to say viral infection before even saying hi and us ending up in hospital 2 days later with serious chest infection.
She is in nappy and t shirt as her skin is shivery too.

111 can book you an appt at OoH and they often prioritise small children so will be quicker than just turning up there or at a&e. DD gets like this when she has an infection. Normally tonsils for her.

Sent away as viral again still has a temp over 39. Said could be tonsilitus by the morning 😐 saw practice nurse hmm.

My little boy, 13 months had a temperature of 42 one night not long ago! I panicked and phoned 111. By the time they arranged a call back from a nurse, calpol had kicked in and it dropped to 40.8, and they weren't bothered. Didn't want to see him, said own GP in the morning. He came down with full blown tonsillitis the next day!

I feel like they throw the word virus around too often. I get that overuse of antibiotics will make them ineffective but with babies and small children i dont think you should have to wait for it to get so bad.

Last week I was told I had a virus and sent away. They did take bloods (as another dr thought maybe sepsis - so not viral!) and it turned out I had bacterial pneumonia and needed antibiotics. If they can't see anything in ear/threat/cheat they tend to wave off as viral even though you can obvs have infections elsewhere. As it turns out my chest sounded clear but obviously wasn't at all.

My DD is 2 and we've had this situation twice in the last six months. Tonsillitis both times. The penicillin clears it up fast but the fever at the start is scary. Hope your little one feels better soon.

Temp is much better but she wont eat and is crying when shes drinking her throat is that sore 😭

No i was told it was viral but now I wonder if shes getting her last double tooth as she keeps just crying and pointing to her mouth but wont let me near her mouth with teetha granules

Still having major issues and shes so distressed with it she doesnt know what she wants to do at all and so cries but doesnt want comforting or to not be comforted! She ate 3 yogurts all day yesterday and probably had 60ml of fluids other than calpol. We had the worst night since she was newborn literally every hour she was up with a temp. Back to dr today i reckon

It's horrid but she'll be better soon. Sucking ice lollies is good way of getting fluids and energy in and has slight anaesthetic action from cold. Those little mini milk sized ones.
Tepid/cool bath (not cold), just a nappy, distraction and sleep.

Just to update you all today. She had a 3 hour nap this afternoon after having not eaten all day other than 4oz of milk, she woke up with a high temp again and covered in a rash. Took her back to dr, not only does she have tonsilitus she also has scarlet fever. Feel so bad for her no wonder shes felt so crap!!!!
