My DS is 5 months & for the last month has decided to only pooh on a weekly basis. He then has a few poohs that day, one the following day & waits another week. Before this the time between poohs was getting longer from 1 day to 2 etc till we've reached the week. In all other ways he is happy, sleeps, alter & active etc. He is exc BF so thought that constipation was rare. Should I have taken him to the DR or just accept this as his normal pattern till I wena him next month?

My dd was like this and it really stressed me out at the time so I sympathise. You need to remember that breastmilk is incredibly efficient and therefore creates very little waste with some babies. His bowel movements will totally change once he is on solids so please don't worry. As long as he doesn't seem uncomfortable and is happy in every other way he'll be fine. Enjoy the fact you don't have to deal with poo everyday. I wake up to a 2 year old with a full nappy every morning and my daughter really hasn't got the hang of wiping he bottom yet!!

Thanks so much for reassurance. Was trying not to worry but think it was nigggling at back of mind for a bit!!!! He is a typical boy though & at the age of 5 months has learnt to lift 1 leg & fart!!! Disgusting young man!!!

My dd was exactley the same until I weaned her at about 5 1/2 months. She was breast fed when I weaned her she wouldnt stop pooing! if hes happy other wise i shouldnt worry, have you talked to your hv.

Ditto everyone. Exc BF infants frequently are infrequent after the first few weeks.

This pattern sounds fine as long as he's healthy, growing, feeding, wetting etc etc.

It's only in the first week or two that you need to have this checked.

totally normal in breastfed babies, i know of one baby who went 13 days

hunkermunker · 08/03/2007 13:42

Totally normal. Don't worry about changing your diet.

Bmilk is the perfect food for babies, so it all gets used up with making them grow and there's very little waste.

It's also perfectly normal for them to go three times a day at this age, btw, in case anyone is worried their bfed infant poos too much...

Thanks for reassurance. I do eat lots of fruit & veg & dont suffer form constipation but may try adding a few more in.
Not talked to HV as mine is crap- sorry but no other word for it & she is so keen on weaning & formula I know she would tell me it wasnt normal & I needed to wean him!

Ditto everyone that says it normal but also I agree with muminfife. Mine used to go up to 9 days with no poo. I wasn't worried about constipation etc but it used to really stress me out because when he did go it was really really massive. Once i was in a cafe and he went... it went down his dungarees, down my leg, onto my shoe and there was a huge big yellow pile on the floor I was SOOO embarrassed (and smelly)! I found that once I reintroduced onion, garlic and chilli he started going more regularly in more containable quantities!
