Cubs/Beavers

My sons have been going to Beavers/Cubs for 3 weeks, last week they couldn't go but they went tonight and the first week so altogether they've only been twice.

Thing is I've been told tonight they I need to buy them jumpers and scarfs for next week and start paying the subs of £5 each a month. The jumpers are £12 each.

I really begrudge being pressured into buying 2 jumpers when they've only been twice and this month happens to be a very skint one for me due to holiday payments I've had to make.

I'm thinking of just taking them out of it as, like I say I begrudge the pushyness of the uniform so soon.

Am I being unreasonable? are all scouts places like this?

This sounds about right to me. They've been given 3 weeks to see if they like it, and need to be kitted out now. Are they getting invested next week? If not you could probably argue that they shouldn't have uniform untill then. Is there anyone you could buy a second hand jumper off? Boys who have just left? Some groups run a seconds shop, with cast off/donated uniform sold to raise funds for the group.

DS started beavers in September, he didn't need a uniform initially, but he did need it for when he was invested - about a month later. I was happy to cough up at this point, as he was enjoying it and wanted to continue. I also had to pay £40 subs for the next 2 terms at that point - they ask for £60 a year. If your Ds's are enjoying themselves and want to go I would say cough up and let them, or maybe see if you can get second hand sweatshirts?

DS has had such a great time at Beavers, done so many interesting things, and I think that it has been a cheap interest to be honest, I mean, there isn't a lot you can do for less than £2 a week, with no extra costs.

We did not have to buy ds' uniform until he made his Beaver promise, which I think was about six weeks in.

We get a month free to try it out and then if staying we do a standing order and get a uniform.
DS1 is now a scout and DS2 is a beaver and they are loving it.
Please don't be hasty in taking them out. Have a chat with the pack leader and see if you can sort something out.

Maybe you could put out a shout on here for 2nd hand uniform? would help keep the cost down?
