I've written a spelling game which was originally just for my son as he was having problems in school. I've combined all the things he loves - football and gaming but added all the National Curriculum spellings into the mix!!
So far for the last few weeks it has really helped him and his spelling tests in school have improved!!
The app is for Android devices and is available on the Google Play Store for FREE. It's called "Football WORD Cup"

It doesn't have in-app purchases, chat facilities or log any personal details so it's safe for kids of all ages.
