8 month old baby fell off bed

My 8 month old baby fell off bed and now has a red mark on forehead. I turned around for a second and he had fell. He cried but now seems fine. I fell like a horrible person but I'm worried. Do I take him to A and E? I'm worried they will take him off me or call social services but it was an accident. He's never fell before. Has this ever happened to anyone else and their baby Been fine?

Give him homeopathic Arnica (you can dissolve a pill in water and mix with his milk or food). 1 Arnica pill of 200c three times over 24 hours is fine. That will help with the bruising. Keep an eye on him and he should be fine but if you are worried, take him to A&E. It will take more than one bruise for social services to get involved and it will be clear that you did the right thing.

Most children fall off beds at some point, staff at A&e know this. Please never ever think twice about taking a child to A&e because you are concerned that social services may get involved. A genuine injury/accident will always be treated as such. If you have any concerns about your baby please do not hesitate to take them.

I feel for you as exactly the same thing happened to me, except it was the sofa and he fell onto wooden flooring. I called 111 who said if there was no blood and his breathing was OK, he wasnt drowsy and he was eating/drinking, then he should be fine - but to keep a close eye for 24 hours and go to A & E if you have concerns.

At the time, I was fine and in control, but as soon as DP came home from work, I started shaking and felt so guilty/upset for the rest of the day. I think it was the 'what could have been' that upset me most.

Talking to mums afterwards, it seems to almost be a rites of passage!

(Had to laugh when you mentioned social services as I had no choice but to inform them - our little one is adopted but Order not gone through yet, so we legally had to notify them. I was absolutely mortified - but they were lovely and told me you cant keep them wrapped up in cotton wool 24/7!).

🙊. Sorry, but I have to giggle. It's happened to everyone one time or another. I know every one of my 3 children fell off the bed at around that age. They get so fast so quickly. As long as he's active and happy I wouldn't worry and you're not a bad mother or horrible person!

I do wonder how logical thinking doesn't come into these kinds of posts at all?

Do you actually think social services would take your baby away from you for falling off a bed? How does that thought process even happen surely you realise that's a completely wild and ridiculous conclusion?

Happened to me I took baby to a and e. Or you could go to gp or out if hours.

It's happened to all of us! My toddler pulled my newborn off the sofa onto the floor (learnt my lesson about leaving them alone!) when she was only about 2 months. Absolutely fine. If baby seems well, you really don't need to worry. They are very resilient little things!

Take your baby to the doctors or A&E if you are worried..Doc's if just worried, A&E if you think there is something wrong, in my opinion...The same thing happened to me 17 years ago...I thought the baby ok, and it was...I didnt go anywhere for a checkup, but did phone for a relative to come straight over to double check. (First time mum after all)

Thank you everyone! I just feel so guilty. I phoned my doctors and the receptionist told me to just go to A and E because they had no appointments and the doctors would just advise me to take him to A and E anyway.
I thought it would have been simpler just to go A and E. Would a walk in centre see him for this reason and would be able to check him out?

I felt mortified when my ds first fell off the bed. But he was fine. It's happened more than a few times since . But he's a 16mo toddler now and bumps happen quite a bit. The last spectacular effort was running along the sofa, and not stopping at the end. Face down, head first onto the floor... theres more I can think about that make me chuckle tbh... I panick more than ds does. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Don't give him anything before you have him checked out. He's unlikely to be hurt so please try not to worry. My nephew rolled off the bed and was fine.

Tbh unless they were drowsy or had been knocked out it wouldn't even cross my mind to go the the GP, let alone A&E! That said I am clearly a randomer on the internet so must advise you have your baby checked out of you feel they need to be

All 3 of my children have fallen off the bed. They are all perfectly fine.

This has happened to everyone. A&E will tell you to keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours.

Unless he's unsettled or seems drowsy I wouldn't worry too much. These things happen. I have 2 DD's that have both fallen down stairs in my house at one point or another and been perfectly fine. You do feel massively guilty about it but you can't stop every fall or bump so please don't beat yourself up. Just keep an eye on him and if you're worried about him at all go to a&e.

Just in A and E and waiting as I really wanted to make sure everything was ok. I saw the nurse to start and she said he would be seen by a doctor and then he would have to go up to the ward as he's below 12 months old. I don't understand this. I told her I can't go up there because my husband starts work at 3 and we have absolutely no other person to have my other children who are off for half term. I never heard of them doing this? I said I can't go to the ward but I don't think they are happy with his can I refuse to leave after the doctor has seen him?

I think you really have to go with medical advice. They are probably being cautious but better to be safe than sorry. Your husband will probably have to take emergency/ carers leave today.

Your son is probably okay, they will just be being over-cautious. I wouldn't take him if the recommendation is to keep him on the ward - that would be seen as a red flag (was told this when I called 111 when my then 5 year old had fallen off a slide and had a black eye where he'd fallen against the bar at the bottom).

Hope all goes well. When babies are up and cruising they take a lot of bumps stumbling around etc

Not a & e, but when I took my son to the docs because I was worried he had an ear infection, the nurse looked him over and thought he was ok but the doctor checked him over after (between his booked appointments). I think it's standard for drs to do a once over after auxiliary checks when they're under 12 months.

I think it's a sorta rite of passage them falling off the bed. As long as they're alert I didn't generally take them to see a doctor. Just an extra eye for a few hours.

Now you're there though you'll have to do what they ask... even if that means going up to the ward. He may not have to go but they might want to keep an eye on him for a bit. I wouldn't worry

Best to go with what they suggest. The thing is with A and E, you could have been there or hours regardless of whether you later get asked to stay on a ward. Your husband will have to call in and take parental leave or whatever it's called.

I've been seen now. The doctor from the ward had to come and see him from the ward and said he seems fine and doesn't have to stay in or anything which is a relief and it's just precaution to be seen by him. I'll just keep an eye in his for the next 48 hours. Thank you for your help everyone. Just feel very teary at the moment.'
