colic confusion

My ds2 had colic from 2 days old til 8 weeks when it completely stopped - I think it started early because he was 10 days late - but may just be one of those things. The thing is I have read in a few places recently that there is no such thing as colic and could be down to evening routine, how you feed etc etc and that it can easily be sorted - from my own experience - my son def had colic - it wasn't the feeding or routine - he just screamed for two hours most eveings from about 5pm til 7pm. Nothing change din his world at 8 weeks or anything - so what d'you reckon?

Now expecting no.3 and hoping he doesn't get it - no.1 didn't - is it something I did or not?

Any thoughts?

both my DC had colic. DD from about 6wks - 12wks (5pm - 9pm) and DS from 5wks - 20wks (8am - 8pm!) so not down to evening routing at all. For DS HV thought it might be reflux, but DR said not, just colic. I think they either have it or don't.

DS had colic, DD1 didn't, but DD2 had colic every single evening between 7 and 10pm until last week. It started on Christmas Eve, we spent romantic New Years Eve and Valentine's Day pacing the floors with her!It was a complete nightmare, but we got a herbal remedy which seems to have worked. Now, we put her to bed at 8pm and she sleeps through till 9am (well, wakes up a couple of times for feeds - I'm BF- then straight back to sleep). It's a load off our minds, and I have time for Mumsnet now!!!

My dd had all-day colic for 4 mths and it was hell on earth. I did everything in my power to get her into a routine - but she wasn't having it. I personally think colic is caused by milk protein or lactose allergy

Colic all day and a good portion of the night for 4/5 months. It just tailed off.

I think what upset me most was HV and DRs not knowing how to help. They all said that they didn't know what caused it.

Octopussyintummy, my DS was 17 days late - that might be it, but who knows? I had a C-section and he was very low down, so they had to pretty much dig him out. He was also a very good sucker - very greedy. It could be any of those things.

One thing I am sure of is that it wasn't my fault. I did all I could to make the poor little chap comfortable. The routine we tried to stick to was the tried and tested text-book one. He was just so unhappy all the time.

Thanks for your replies - very reassuring that its not just me. I am going to breastfeed this time (hopefully) - so can't be blamed on the formula - which one midwife said in fact very with that one! Then if he does get it can try cranial osteopathy or homeopathy.

both mine were bf, so there goes that mw's theory DS was 2 wks early, but induced.

I bf all mine too, octopussyintummy. I think I might have fed DS and DD2 too often during the day, mistaking their cries for hunger instead of merely wanting attention. Anyway, DD2's just over it and I think it's because she's feeding less often (her growth rate has probably slowed down), plus I'm putting her to sleep at 8pm (I think this was the point it used to start, so I stop it before it starts!).

b/f babies can still suffer colic. Sometimes helps if mum stops eating dairy.

Colic does exist - just ask any parent who's suffered from it! It annoys me when professionals deny its existence.

I don't think it's down to anything you do particularly, although if a baby is b/f some people think that cutting out certain foods helps. But some babies get colic, and others don't. Often in the same family, some babies do and others brought up in exactly the same way don't.
