5 week old having big wees!

The last two nights my 5 week old DS has been doing big wees which go through his vest and sleepsuit and onto crib sheet. Last night we had three complete outfit changes! 😩 He is wearing Pampers Premium Dry Sensitive nappies (Aldis ones gave him nappy rash). He was in size 1 so I bought him size 2 yesterday but tonight we're having the same problem. I always point his willy down and make sure all the nappy frills are out etc. I'll never get him sleeping through the night if the damn nappies only last a couple of hours! What am I doing wrong? I've resorted to putting a cloth nappy waterproof outer over his nappy now hoping that will contain it?? 🙈

I'm in the same boat! No advice, I'm afraid... hopefully someone will be along with a suggestion.

I never found pampers to be very good for that age. The absorbent core doesn't seem to go back far enough and because baby lies down, all the wee runs to the back.

Hold on, we're not supposed to change them overnight?

My DD's also 5 weeks and usually wakes for a feed at 4am. She will always have a wet nappy minimum and so when she pulls off the first time I have been changing her nappy.

Oh, that 4am feed? STILL DOING IT 😩

I've seen many people say that they don't change them overnight unless it's a pooey nappy but I always have done. I wouldn't want to lie in a wet nappy all night.

Sleeping through? 5 weeks??

I changed 5 week old DS twice overnight. I don't think that's much at all at this age. I'm expecting to have to change him overnight for a good few months yet.

I thought a change every couple of hours was normal for a newborn. They wee and poo so much. A newborn nappy definitely wouldn't last the night. Don't think they're designed to.

Don't worry about sleeping through yet either. It can take up to two years.

Could you buy a small pack of every brand/supermarket nappy? Try a different one every night until you find one that can cope? Every time I found one that 'worked', I found them unreliable again when changing sizes and had to keep switching around. The design of them seems to change slightly from size to size.

Also, the + symbol means extra absorbency, not a bigger size, which I didn't find out for a long time!!

I personally found Asda Little Angels the best overall.

On another note mentioned by other posters, I only ever changed the nappy at night if it was feeling full, if it's only a bit of wee if won't feel wet to touch. Definitely only did it if they woke for a feed, never disturbed them to just change the nappy. It disturbs them and wakes them fully, where they might settle back to sleep easily after milk if they have not fully woken.

I'm not expecting him to go through the night NOW I'm just saying that if his nappies can't cope with the amount of wee he's producing at five weeks old how will they ever cope a few months down the line?! Prior to this issue I always changed him when he woke up anyway but having to do an entire outfit change and new sheet on the crib with every nappy change seems ridiculous! He's now sporting his fourth set of clothes tonight!! Ironically whereas he's been feeding every couple of hours through the night, now it's just his wet nappy/clothes that are waking him up and he's not that bothered about feeding once he's dry again. Waterproof outer didn't work ☹️ so he's in two nappies now!

To be honest I might persevere with the cloth nappies. I wasn't using them at night but I think they might actually be more suitable now in light of this problem!

The nappies will be more absorbent in the bigger sizes because they're not expecting them to be changed.

So DS in size 2 was changed twice overnight. 22 month DD in size 5s wasn't changed overnight but will have a really heavy nappy in the morning.

Do you use cloth during the day? You could try overnight with a booster? You might have to change the nappy but if you're using a two part, they shouldn't leak onto the clothes. I haven't put DS in cloth overnight yet but DD was in cloth overnight from about 8 weeks.

It's not the nappy changing that bothers me (I was doing that every time he woke up anyway), it's the fact that all his clothes and crib sheet are drenched every couple of hours too. Are you guys all having to change your baby's clothes several times a night?

@teaandbiscuitsforme Yes, using cloth during the day but definitely going to try them at night with a booster tomorrow night. Hadn't been using them at night because they don't lock away the moisture in the same way so I thought disposables were better at night and because the boosters are so bulky! But he's bigger now so the booster might not seem so huge.

The boosters are massive! DD never seemed uncomfortable overnight in cloth until about 18 months when the wetness was affecting her sleep. This is helping get closer to potty training though so swings and roundabouts!

You could pop him on a large puppy pad to help stop the sheets getting soaked each night (I know this isn't really the answer but might just help if you don't have to strip the bed each night several times over!)

Also do you use fleece liners? They act as a stay dry layer between the skin and nappy so it doesn't feel wet on their bottom. Cheap IKEA fleece blankets work brilliantly!

They bambo disposables. I used cloth in the day, and these at night. They look expensive but I only ever needed 1 per night.

It was only at about 7 months that I stopped changing my DD overnight before that she had lots of milk over night so had to be changed.

Are you properly releasing all the elastic around the edge of the nappy? Sorry if you are.

I'd try either the next size up or pampers baby dry. Pampers premium protection is more for poos where as baby dry are designed for night times so they don't wake up wet through the night. Never had to change my son out of clothes during a day or night unless he had a poo explosion which Aldi nappies are so bad at containing them hence the reason for the moving to pampers premium protection then when we wanted something to keep him more dry from wees we moved to pampers baby dry and will be sticking with those until he's out of nappies!

Do try another brand if you can, some nappies which we used with no probs with DD (Tesco, Asda etc) are useless for DS. The Tesco ones sometimes leaked first pee! Think he is a funny shape

Pampers baby dry were rubbish for us. Been using Pampers premium which are better but most nights we have a leak.
