Leaving child in car seat

What are your thoughts on leaving a 2 month old and a 20 month old in a car while dropping and picking up older child from school? If you can see the car at all times?

Nope. No reason to leave a child in the car in my opinion. Put them in a buggy.

Wouldn't even consider this. At that age they are so light you can keep him in the car seat as you carry him in. Or sling.

No, sorry. Car was recently stolen from outside a shop with a baby inside near where we live. Mum had just popped in to the shop. Wouldn't risk it.

Xmas I think the OP has TWO children to carry or leave in the car. Honestly... the set up near our local school I probably would. The traffic is nearly stationary anyway so the chances of someone speeding off in my parked car would be tiny. Plus I imagine getting a toddler out of a car AND a baby safely, then somehow strapping them both back in again... I just can't see how you'd have enough arms. Which would you strap in first?? If you can't take a buggy I'd leave them in the car for 2 minutes with the doors locked where I could see them.

In summary I would do it because it seems to me that would be the safer option.

Really depends on the area. I would, but I'm in a small village, school parking is closed, really close to building and in sight at all times. There really isn't a chance that the car would be stolen at a drop off time. It would be significantly more risky to get baby, toddler and of course the older child across that parking.

I've heard a horror story about a car catching fire - I'd not do it if I could at all avoid it. yes, I know the risks are minute, but could never live with myself if that happened.

Personally I wouldn't. A child at my son's school wriggled out of his car seat (think he had a padded coat on) and somehow let the handbrake off. The car rolled across the car park and hit the school sign. Luckily it was very low impact and no one was hurt .

My almost 1 year old is going through a phase of separation anxiety, so I wouldn't leave him because I know he'd get all worked up.

With two your ages I would put the 2 month old in a sling/carrier, and the 20 month old in a buggy and take them out to the playground - you never know when you'll take longer than you expect.

That said, if they wouldn't get upset being left in the car I wouldn't vilify you for leaving them there.

Have to say i can totally see why you are considering leaving them. I find it hard enough with only one baby to get out, twice a day, for all of 1.5 mins.

I don't see the issue if the car is in sight the whole time and parked / locked safely. However, if the car isn't in sight there would be no way.

I wouldn't.
I had two under two yrs old. I would either take baby out and put her in pram, take toddler and school child out, or take baby out in car seat, then get the other two out.
You can use a wrist strap or reins for the toddler near roads if needed. We also had a buggy board on pram for the toddler.
Really only take a few minutes.
I wouldn't be able to see the car at all from the school door either.

I've been in a few school gates parking threads now. As a disabled mum I'm unable to walk more than a few meters and can't use my wheelchair as the street has tree roots pushing up the pavement and making lumps to big for me to safely get over.

You will be taking up one of the closest parking spaces to the school. Do you know for sure these are not currently used by disabled parents? Also, and I speak from painful experience, it's rare that you get the closest space.

I'd respectfully suggest you find another way around this problem. I used a sling with my son (I was to weak to pick up the car carry seat and lug it around) and he really enjoyed that closeness as a baby. Your toddler can surely stand for a few mins?

If the weather is awful and they're happy alone. Maybe.
But mine never did like being in the car and I think the school rubbish one of these things you kind of need to embrace rather than endure. So baby in a sling and toddler in weather appropriate clothing and walk at least some of the way. Fresh air and more sociable. And also eases the awful congestion at schools and the risk of accidents from so much traffic.

I don't, I take mine out when taking the older two to school (8&5) ds3 (3) holds my hand, ds4 (20mth) goes in front seat of the pram and dd (7 month) goes on the back of the pram in her carseat... It is a pain getting them all out and putting them back aswell as the pram up and down for sake of a couple minutes but I just don't think I could trust leaving them, I'd feel panicky...but everyone is different.

When I was in my early 20s, before I even had children, I witnessed my neighbor's car bursting into flames just moments after she parked and got out. Within seconds it was an inferno. I said then I'd never leave my future kids in a car, and I never did.
