Using terry nappies.

Hi,

Although DS is 3yrs he's still nowhere near dry and having tried potty training without any success I've put him back in nappies a while longer, I know that's frowned upon and he should be dry but the fact is he's just not ready yet so nappies make life so much easier and protect my carpets !

I'm using terry squares now for the first time and wondered if I should be using any cream? - he doesn't seem to be having any soreness although he's a heavy wetter and in terries full time - I was going to just carry on the way I am but always imagine mums using terries always applied cream.

Any other advice using terries would also be a great help as I'm a complete newbie to this :-)

Are you using fleece liners?

I'm just using the terries without a liner but I do use 2 squares overnight.

I only use cream when they need it.

What wraps are you using?

If you start using fleece liners you won't need to use cream. Just using terries will make his bottom sore but he will feel the wetness, which I guess is what you're after?

For night time you can buy bamboo boosters to increase absorbency rather than using two squares.

Hiya. You don't have to use cream but I'd get a cheap fleece blanket and cut out some liners if I were you.
If you have a local nappy library they'd probably be able to lend or even give you some.

I'm just using cheap plastic pants as he's newly in terries and I don't expect to use them for long unless he needs a night nappy for some time. To be fair the pants work well, I know they aren't anything like modern covers but I just want something cheap to go over his nappy and not leak.

I've heard other mums say to avoid them but I change regularly and so far no problems - the only downside is I change terries more than I did with disposables as I worry about soreness.

I never bother with fleece liners either. If it works you don't need to improve it.

How often are you changing? Does he know when he is wet?

I'd have thought in just a terry and pants he'd soon feel the wetness and want changing but it doesn't seem to bother him, infact he'd rather stay in a wet nappy than face having it changed.

I do change a lot though even if he doesn't seem uncomfortable, maybe it's worth making up some fleece and leaving the nappy on a bit longer.

We go about 3hrs between changes but it depends where we are and how wet he is so it can sometimes be longer or shorter than that.

It hard to tell wether he knows he's wet as it doesn't seem to bother him and at the age he is he'd rather avoid a nappy change if it's possible.

Allegedly we were all potty trained much earlier than children these days because we felt the wetness - or maybe our mothers just had more incentive with all the extra washing

Every 3 or so hours sounds fine.

It sounds like you are doing it all fine, so now just sit back and wait for summer and then have another crack then. Is he at school next year or the one after? You have loads of time either way.

I guess if you had to handwash terries there was a big incentive :-)

I'm told boys are slower too, mine in not even remotely interested in the potty - I can see me using nappies for a while yet.

What folds do others mums use ?

If you look up the Nappy Lady on YouTube she has lots of tutorials on different folds. For boys you want something with a lot of padding at the front - at night time I use one bamboo booster laid flat, and then fold one in half and place at the front for super absorbency.
For at home use you can pre-fold your nappies to make life easier for yourself.

We use a kite fold with a hemp boost inside

I'm still experimenting with different folds etc at the moment the kite is the easiest to get on a very wiggly 3 yr old but not always that absorbent for a heavy wetter
