Reflux... lying down!?

Lo is 3 months and has just started IG. Does this mean she will finally sleep in her cot? ( Raised?)

So far, due to choking issues (CMPI - now on Neocate) she has only slept when being held. Will the Infant Gaviscon allow her to sleep on her back? (Ever?!)

Have you considered a cot wedge? That will prop her up so that she can sleep at an angle.

It just depends on how effective the Gaviscon is as to how she will sleep.

My DS is 2 months old and has been on gaviscon since about 3 weeks old and he still won't sleep on his back. I've tried a wedge under his mattress with no luck. The only way he will sleep is on his belly - fully aware this is against sids advice but its the only way he will sleep other than on me or DP but we don't want to co sleep.

Will also add his reflux seems to be under control for the time being and I still can't get him to sleep on his back. He literally wriggles around grunting, groaning and hacking all night. Might just be him though.

Anyone had any success?

We had to prop our moses up with books, luckily DS was very small and in it til he was about 5 months. Then when he went in the cot, we put a pillow underneath the bedding with the fitted sheet on tip of it to prop him up.
He just couldn't sleep on his back. As soon as he could roll, he used to roll onto his front and slept perfectly fine like that.

His reflux was horrendous, we had a lovely awful hospital stay because of it.
When he was first diagnosed at 10 days old, the only place we could get him to sleep was in his bouncer/vibrating type chair. Even the doctor agreed that he should stay in it until further notice.

It's a nightmare, you have my sympathies

Did it get better??

Yes. We weaned him at 4 months and that was the turning point. I think we completely stopped the gaviscon and ranitidine by 8 months-ish.

He's 2.3 now and absolutely fine.

He used to projectile vomit practically every bottle at an impressive distance and we ended up in hospital because it used to cause him to stop breathing.
Having a 10 day old 6lb tiny baby not breathing and being in hospital with him on my own for 3 nights, not yet really recovered from having him and getting to grips with becoming a first time mum was something I never want to experience again.

I remember just sitting there holding him sobbing thinking I'd broken him in my sleep deprived state and the lovely nurse being amazing.

But honestly, it got better. Once the meds kick in properly.
Just try and keep her upright as much as possible and prop her up in her cot. So long as she's safe, do whatever it takes to make her comfy

Ikwym about feeling like you've broken him, I keep wondering if all the Rennies I had when I was pregnant are the cause of it

IG helpes the reflux but caused constipation we eventually got the GP to perscribe rantadine and it solved the problem.

Both of my boys had awful reflux. The 14month old is still on ranitidine.
Depending on how big your daughter is, you might want to look at a cocoonababy. It made a MASSIVE difference to how well our babies slept. And they could sleep on their backs in it.

DS spent a month of his life sleeping upright in a wedged baby walker in a snowsuit due to reflux. Was the only way he could sleep. Even being held if I so much as leaned back a little he would wake up howling. Luckily he grew out of it.

Gaviscon did literally nothing for my DS. Omeprazole helped with the pain but didn't stop any of the sick. We had a reflux wedge under the mattress and tilted the cot and velcro sleep positioner to stop him slipping down. He still threw up but it did decrease. He could never ever lie down. Another wedge to put the change mat on and other than that he was either held, in the baby bjorn babysitter balance seat or in the seat part of the pram instead of the carrycot. As it started to improve he did better sleeping on his side before back. Things really started to improve more around 18m-2y and he can sleep on his back flat now.

I agree that Gaviscon is not helpful. It did nothing for my son. Ranitidine helped but tastes awful meaning my son had=s an aversion to medicine, even calpol! We also ended up in a and e due to breathing stopping. I did use Aptamil Reflux formula which helped and he's kind of grown out of it, though if he gets a cough he's sick quite easily.

He's now nearly 22 months btw!

Infant Gaviscon helped my DS loads. He would sleep on his back if I held him upright for about 30 mins after a feed, then lowered him down really slowly keeping him pressed to my body while I did it iyswim. He always used to slide down the Moses basket if I wedged it up, but Velcro sounds genius.
