What age do kids learn to tie thier own shoe laces

I'm trying to buy winter boots for my just turned 3 yr old and they all have shoe laces in his size (smaller have velcro straps).

Are other 3 yr olds really tieing their own laces?

I've found it's a vicious circle really. Because they can't tie laces yet you buy shoes with velcro. But then because they have no shoes with laces, they don't learn how to tie them.

My 8 and 10 year old can both do it but are still quite bad at it, in that it takes them ages and they can't get them really tight or do it so that they stay done up so I still end up doing them up in double knots for them otherwise they come undone all day. My 6 year old can't do it yet but has asked about it so I said I would teach him soon.

I also bought elastic laces for several pairs of shoes. But it depends on the type of adjuster how easy they are to do up and undo for kids.

My ds learned just before he turned 7 because he plays football so needed to put his boots on. He got it within 2 mins so probably could have learnt early.

We use snow boots for winter boots! I certainly did for my two as toddlers.

DS was four. He used to get himself dressed, then wait for me to tie his shoes so he could go off and play. He got fed up with waiting for me to tie his shoes one day and literally tied them himself, as if to spite me! Never looked back.

I'm planing to get snow boots but they have laces in the places I've looked so far.

I need two pairs per child as they are in winter boots from now until early may so they grow out of them.

I'll try the elastic laces for.this year and see if we can try lace tying next year.

DS was very nearly 8.
DD did it 2 weeks later. She was 4.

Never had a problem getting either child Velcro shoes, DS still has them for school, out of school and trainers and he is an adult size 2.5.

lljkk · 15/10/2016 17:57

I was 8, DD was 8.
(Actually I lie, I still struggle).
DS1 was 14.
DS2 can't really yet (12).

I hate it when the footie boys have lace up boots (DS-8yo team, he hasn't tried laces). If the laces come undone the poor lad has to stop playing completely to faff about with them. Lock laces or velcro or so much more sensible.

YerAWizardHarry · 15/10/2016 17:59

I had this problem when trying to find stylish trainers for DS, he's also 3 and a size 10 (almost 11) we ended up ordering trainers with straps online

Artandco · 15/10/2016 18:07

I'm not sure many grow two shoe sizes in 6 months though, so hopefully one pair will be fine now. Especially if your planning on buying two sizes big anyway.

Nike do kids trainers with elastic laces and a Velcro strap. They are less than £20 in their outlet stores. They also have them in Brantano. Size up though.

Muddy Puddles and Lands End do Velcro snow boots. The Land's End ones are excellent and have really good soles.

BikeRunSki · 15/10/2016 20:56

Very cheap Muddy Puddles Velcro snow boots here but only pink, and limited sizes.

More Muddy Puddles snowboots here

Elastic lace /Velcro strap Nike trainers many, many more sizes and colours and usually cheaper in their outlet stores.

isthistoonosy · 18/10/2016 20:44

wow those are cheap but I already got a pair today which inc shipping weren't too much more. Prob for the best nusery keep misplaing his sisters clothes as they give them back to the boys instead.
Thanks for the advice everyone

I still struggle at 52- but then I do have dodgy finger joints.

Mine were both 4 but they wore football boots for school football so I taught them for that reason. There seems to be velcro on shoes all the way up to size 4 or 5 now so the need to be able to do them has gone.

We practiced using quite long laces on a piece of card but 3 would be pretty young I reckon.
