Suggestions for Swim Nappies?

Hello,

I would love to hear everyone's experiences with different types of swim nappies - what does everyone think are the best ones? Any disasters?

Interested in both washable and disposable ones.

Does anyone use a liner in washable ones?

I've taken DS every week since he was 7 wks and he's now 8 mos. We use the mothercare reusuable swim nappies which have a terry layer, then plastic, then swim suit material. They are nice and snug but allow him to move easily, we've been really pleased. That said though they have never been put to the test with a poo! I'm hoping I'm good enough at reading LO signs that if I thought he was going to do a poo I could whisk him out the pool pronto!

they do different sizes, but I think that may be the only size online. Ds2's is yellow.

I used aquanappies with ds and got on really well with them. Got them from John Lewis but they're pretty easily available.

However got a pair for dd and they were on the large side, but didn't really think anything of it at the time.

I never imagined they would be put to the test...

...let's just say, if you were in the baby pool at center parcs last month I am soooo soooo sorry

Aquanappies imho have a BIG design flaw, as I discovered with ds1 - because they are 'pull-on', when they fill with poo (and with ds1 they didn't contain it which was highly unpleasant...), you have to pull the poo (mixed with swimming pool water) down their legs. Which is not nice. I much prefer the 'nappy style' ones that velcro at the front, as the child can just be lifted out. Trying to get the poo over their knees is not a pleasant experience. Because the swimming pool water mushes it all up iyswim!!!!

I used a motherease one for ds2. Has poppers at the side to adjust which we found good. Have used aquanappies also but found they fell down!

The first, poo leaked out into the pool in a fine brown film. Not easily spotted by unsuspecting swimmers....

The second happened with my dd. Picture the scene - she was changed, ready to go in the pool (and toddling by this time). I put her down on the changing rooms floor, on her feet, while I put our things in the locker. I locked the locker (important point to remember). I picked up dd, and realised my hand was in something warm, sticky and very smelly and brown. Yes, she had done a poo in her swim nappy. And all my stuff was in the locker, and my hand was covered in poo. So I gingerly got the stuff out of the locker, got her cleaned up (and it was VAST), happily had a disposable swim nappy spare, put her in that and was about to go in the pool, when I looked down, and saw a HUGE pile of her poo on the floor that had obviously leaked out of the swim nappy. Worse still, it had a footprint in it, and a trail leading away from the pile into a changing room. My feet were clean, as were dd's.....

I was SO embarrassed. Slunk into the swimming pool, after cleaning up the worst of it. Can't bear to think of the person's reaction as they saw their feet.

We used to use a disposable swin nappy with a splash about happy nappy over the top for hydro pool lessons. Nothing escapes those things

Hi mrsvern,

Why use a disposable under a splash about? I've heard of this being done but am not sure why. I can see why a nappy (opening) style is a good idea ;-) and I'm wondering if the point of the dispie is to make it easier to handle poos?

Loving the stories, please let me more!!!!

The pool insisted on the double layer but TBH it made it sooooo much easier to clean up a poo. The splash about's aren't meant to be machine washed. Just rinsed through

i used to use a normal swaddlebees nappy (v slim) with my smallest wrap (cotton bottoms) over the top - did the job just fine imo.

she has grown out of the wrap now so interested to see what swim nappies are good.

pmsl at tortoiseshell btw - that is the kind of thing that would happen to me but so far hasn't.....

Have used a bambino mio (IIRC) reusable that was just like baggy trunks, wasn't confident that would contain pooh, tho never put to test. When he out grew it I got from konfidence.com their 3month- 3 year swim nappy and a neoprene nappicover . The swim nappy is VERY adjustable for fit with velcro and poppers, opens out flat for removal/ fitting, has a outer fabric layer, waterproof layer and then inner fabric layer. Over that I use the nappicover which like a happy nappy is practicly pooh proof with big lycra cuffs at waist and legs, keeps him warm too and looks like shorts.

I use huggies swim nappies - DS has pooed in them and it stayed in there... so no tortoiseshell horrors here!!

It seems the neoprene ones are the best.

Anyone used one of those with a "net" - and had to use it in anger?? I wonder whether it works!!

I'm writing an article about swim nappies for my local NCT (National Childbirth Trust) magazine (free charity newsletter that I voluteer on, so I think it's ok to ask a "journalist" question here!!) so if anyone has any swim nappy stories to share that they don't mind having printed (anonymously!!) I'd really appreciate it - thank you.

Anyone who's already listed their stories here - may I use them? (I won't, of course, unless you say it's ok).

I have used both huggies and the mothercare plastic/terry pants and (when DS was going through a phase of doing explosive poos) occasionally both in combination. However luckily none have ever been tested with a poo in the pool so I can't speak for their reliability. The huggies/plastic pants combo looks bomb-proof though.

A good tip is that huggies disposables are reusable. Just rinse them in clean water and dry on the radiator and they come up like new. We have have survived 9 months of weekly swimming on just one packet of huggies.
