21 month old with fever 39.1

Looking for advice:

My son has had a fever all day, just had his third dose of calpol (can't have ibuprofen due to kidney scarring from urine reflux). Tonight's his temperature has hit 39.1. He seems ok in himself, but grumpy and just under the weather.

His temperature has only come down to 38.8 in an hour since having his calpol. Stripped to his vest. Is this a slow decline in temp does anyone know?

Also his baby brother was born two days ago so I know that's unsettled him a little too. And I'm also worried about my 2 day old getting this cold!

Call 111, they will have a doctor call you back within an hour who will advise what to do.

For what it's worth, random fevers with no other symptoms seem to be fairly normal in toddlers. My ds gets them regularly especially this time of year. That said, I would have expected the fever to have dropped more by now so do speak to someone tonight if you can.

Must be so tiring for you with a tiny newborn! Baby will probably be fine though. They seem to have immunity built in for the first few months (or maybe that's the breastfeeding?). My DD was born when my son was 20 months old, and he went through a plethora of viruses in the first 3 months of her life. She was always fine.

Was your hands loads.

I agree, get medical advice. What do you think is the source of the fever? Given his kidney problem, is he wearing ok and getting plenty of fluid?

I think his fever is cold related - most likely picked up at nursery. Seems to be cooling down now and much happier so calpol is kicking in now.

Keeping him well away from his new brother too so hopefully he won't catch his cold!

I wouldn't be too concerned as long as the fever is responding to calpol even if it goes up again once it wears off.
I imagine with his kidney issues you need to keep a particularly close eye on his hydration levels though so good that you are getting some medical advice.
You poor thing - not what you need with a newborn in the house.

My husband is taking him to the gp in the morning now. Hopefully his temp will drop further when he falls asleep shortly.

He's not a happy child, plus the jealousy of his new brother is just making him more unsettled

Just a little handhold for you. My son was hospitalized when my baby was 5 weeks old followed by a whole winter of viral wheezes, ear infections, hand foot and mouth disease, tonsillitis.... There was a part of me that thought he was catching all these bugs at nursery to make sure he still got plenty of attention with the new baby around!
It was a tough few months. It's such a difficult adjustment for the older child, but it gets easier. Hang in there.

Hubbys taken him into paediatric a&e as his fever shot up again and non-stop crying (suspected uti) 😢 Hoping it's just a cold!

It kills me I can't be there to hold him and tell him not to be scared. I'm sure you're right and it's just a bug he's caught off nursery earlier in the week before his brother arrived and unsettled him

How did you get on yesterday nuggles? Did they get to the bottom of it?

Nope, the hospital took him in and said my husband and DS would have a 5 hour wait to be seen so they left. Took him to go yesterday and he wouldn't let the doctor near him - just cried hysterically so they couldn't examine him properly.

He's fine today so we think it was just a 24hr virus. Taking a urine sample to gp on Monday anyway to be checked.

Treatment at the hospital was shocking!

Ah the poor thing. Glad he's getting better. I definitely prefer the our of hours gp appointments to pediatric a&e. The latter are always understaffed and I worry my kids will catch more bugs there, waiting all those hours.
Hope it's all better now. Is the baby OK?
