Getting rid of the dummy at almost 5!

Hi everyone, I really need some help here. My ds is 4.5 and still has a dummy. We only let him have it at night, but since he started school a few weeks ago, he has been wanting it more and more. Now he will try and have it as much as possible. I wanted to get rid of it before he started school full time, but I kept putting it off, and with the upheaval of school I thought I might leave it. The dentist advised that we get rid of it, although it hasn't had an effect on his teeth yet. Can anyone offer any advice?

Just throw it in the bin and tell him that big school boys don't have dummies

Could you tell him the dummy fairy needs it to give to small babies and then have him leave it somewhere where the said fairy could collect it and leave some money in return? He could use the money for a teddy to comfort him instead?

Helpful post from iguess there..Hmm

How about a reward chart or a present to swap for the dummy?

Do a swap at Christmas - leave it out for Santa to take away in exchange for a present?

Oh dear, you've just reminded me. DS1 kept hold of his dummy close to starting school so DH made him a 'big boy's dummy' by drawing round a plate and attaching it to the disc of the dummy.

Poor boy tried to use it but looked so embarrassed.

He soon decided that it was a good idea to swap it for the lovely new tin the 'birdies' had bought him. We'd spun some tale about birdies wanting dummies to fly to new babies.
