ds 3 years tells me when he wants to wee. But he dosnt poo in a potty. Some times when he needs a poo he tells me but cannot do it on a potty. He poos in his underwear or wait till night when I put nappy on him. How did your child learn to poo in a potty?

When dd was training she was very reluctant to poo in the potty and would often wait till it was half way out before telling me she needed. I found that watching her expressions/movements and knowing when she was ready helped as I used to quickly get the potty out and try and encourage her to go on it - followed with loads of praise if/when she did the business in the right place.

Thanks leahsmum. I know it will take time and there is no easy way.

Hi
DS is 4 in May. Same thing. Waits till night time nappy to poo. Have left it hoping he would decide on his own to use loo and because his sister was born a few months ago. Some have suggested we simply remove nappies from the equation but that means he has to also deal with becoming dry all night. Seems a steep learning curve. Have tried daily toilet sitting, incentives (bribes!) but now the holding on till night is interfering with his daily play etc and he seems stressed and tired. Any helpful thoughts?

Have you tried a poo in the potty reward chart? They can be really good for reluctant "poo-ers" and boys particularly like the stickers!

Have tried a range of incentives. Currently he is most keen on little sweets so we have a box. I have said he can have 5 sweets (he knows this is a lot) when he does a proper poo on the loo. He sits on the loo (which I have started requesting of him every time I can see he needs to poo) and he talks animatedly about how many sweets and which he will choose but no poo comes! A bit comes on his bot and he has been soiling pants for a few days now. I just saw on another site that if you get them to blow bubbles it can help so will try that.
