Silent reflux?! Advice please

DS is 3 weeks old and is getting increasingly unhappy with his bottle. He arches his back and cries and splutters on some of his feeds. He coughs and I often hear milk coming back up although he isn't vomiting it. I've looked up his symptoms and it seems to match silent reflux. He doesn't seem to be really bad at the moment, but he has one to three bouts of being really uncomfortable each day with lots of crying.

I'm worried it's going to keep getting worse until this will just be how he is all the time. I'm so sad for him. I have a DD as well so he won't even benefit from all of my attention.

I'm seeing the GP tomorrow to get some advice. But in the meantime can anyone give me any advice or reassurance? I'm so worried about how hard the next few months are going to be for him and us.

Carobel did not agree with DD at all but Infant Gaviscon has made a definite improvement

We were prescribed ranitidine for our daughter. The doctor prescribed gaviscon and we persevered with it for a few weeks but no joy. We then went back and she was prescribed ranitidine and it was like we had a different baby when she took it. She WA so much happier and content.
Hope you have some luck at the doctor and if they prescribe something that doesn't work don't be afraid to go back.
If you're instincts tell you something isn't right then trust them

Baby gaviscon helped but it gave DD constipation so we changed to ranitidine. The Gaviscon was a nightmare when breast feeding.

Have you tried raising the head of his Moses basket and pram?

We also had gaviscon while I was breastfeeding and it was a nightmare (time consuming). I also did loads of carrying in sling which helped. If you have another little one a sling might be handy too for helping you to do stuff. But I did find putting DD in a sling too soon after a feed she was just sick.

Thank you for the advice. We raised his moses basket two nights ago and it made a huge difference to his sleep.
Dr has given gaviscon, he just had his first bottle with it and drank the entire thing without crying out getting upset. I'm so happy I want to cry a bit ( fourth trimester hormones?) he then was sick a bit on me which he's not done before, but it didn't bother him at all. So it's looking a little bit more positive now.

Excellent news. gaviscon can cause constipation, it definitely firms up poo. Don't forget to offer water.

Heir - I was worried that at four weeks he is too young to have water? Is it OK if it mitigates the constipation?

Ff should be offered water when it is warm. I am rubbish at doing it. My DD wakes up feeds, plays and then I offer her water about an hour later. I would give your health visitor a ring and chevk.

So you have the perfect prep machine? We use that for water and just miss the adding formula stage.

I gave 1oz of cooled boiled water to DD when she was constipated. She was about 5 weeks at the time. I have the prep and pep machine but don't use it for just plain water.
