Next door's chimenea

The other night my bedroom (where DS 3.5mo sleeps) smelt strongly of smoke. It was a really warm night and I had to shut the windows. I've now noticed the same again tonight and have just realised my next door neighbour has a chimenea/log burner type thing in their back garden. The smell of smoke is quite strong. Is this unsafe for my little one in any way? I hate sleeping with the window shut but also hate the smell of smoke

I don't know if it's unsafe but I hate them and the smell of smoke too. If it's happening once a month or something then I don't think you can really have a go, but if it's once a week or more it might be worth going round and explaining and asking them to let you know when they'll have it on so you can shut the windows in advance? If they are reasonable they might even try to put it at the end of the garden or something. Hopefully they will be respectful of how it's affecting you. I think speaking to them in as friendly a way as possible initially is the most important thing to preserve your relationship

No it won't harm your baby, its probably smoke from wood/coal etc not filled with chemicals & carcinogens like cigarette smoke is.

There is nothing magically bad about cigarette smoke! Inhaling smoke from burning stuff is bad for you - any smoke from any burning stuff. It's all full of carcinogens and 'chemicals'.

Having said that, don't panic OP, an occasional bit of drifting smoke is unlikely to cause actual harm, it's more of a chronic health risk if exposed over long periods.

I think I'd pop round and have a friendly chat though, as golfmonkey suggests, especially as your baby is so young. They probably have no idea it's causing a nuisance.

Oh dear I was planning on buying one of these as I love them, but would be mortified if I was annoying our neighbours! Maybe a rethink. I'd mention it to them politely, do you know them at all?

OP, summer will be over soon and it'll be too chilly to sit out. Just shut the window while it burns , it's not like it's burning hours and hours, is it?

Nicotine is about as harmful as caffeine and the amount you would absorb sitting among several chainsmokers for a whole evening is about on a par with what you would get from eating an aubergine curry

It's not nicotine that kills or harms smokers or causes harm to people around them. It's the rest of the shit in the inhaled smoke.
