Reusing stairgate

We've been given a pressure fit Lindam stairgate previously used by a friend with two extension bits so it fitted across their hallway. We had to buy a shorter extension bit so it is the right width for our stairs. Trying to put it together but it seems to be nearly impossible to get the plastic end pieces out of the old extension bits so we can transfer to new ones.

Has anyone else successfully reused stair gates? Beginning to wonder if it's a manufacturer thing to encourage you to buy new ones rather than reusing.

I bought mine new but have had to move them round the place and the plastic end bits are an absolute nightmare to get out!

Hot water and a screwdriver to gently prise them out worked for me

Thank you! Think we've broken it as the plastic bit crumbled away using the screwdriver! OH also has deep cut in his thumb from trying to prose them apart...

Oops prise not prose!!
Yeah, it'll be ok. He was complaining about it until I teased him by comparing it with what I went thru giving birth...
Will have a look for the spare parts!!
