Helmet when riding scooter for 2 year old?

Hi my 2 year old has just started riding a scooter, v slowly for now but will get faster I am sure-do u think I should get him a helmet? If not now then when? My instinct is I should get one but he is terrible with any hats so I think this will put him off scooter altogether. And cause some major tantrums! Thanks xx

I never did, and mine survived. At two they are rarely interested in anything for longer than a couple of minutes anyway.

Maybe I was not protective enough. I did start to insist once they began riding bikes though. At two hats of any sort were a waste of time for mine. They all just yanked them off and discarded them within minutes.

Yes definitely. No helmet no scooter here. My neighbour is a paediatrician. She told me scooter head injuries more common than bike head injuries now. Even if they don't go fast and get bored easily it makes the rules crystal clear at a young age. I will admit I let my DS whizz up and down our hall without it but that's it. As soon as we're outside helmet on

I know someone's who's dd fell and hurt her face quite badly. It would have been better if she's been wearing a helmet. She was on a scooter.

Both of mine have gone over their scooter handlebars and luckily had helmets.

When they're 2, they don't go quickly but they soon learn to whizz about.

When my ds was 4 he hit a stone whilst scooting fast, went flying, tooth through lip and his head hit that floor with such force that it cracked his helmet.

Always wear a helmet!

Also ds is now older and it's ingrained a friend offered him a go on a bike and without even really thinking he said no because he didn't have his helmet with him (friend wasn't wearing one ) so I think the earlier you start the better

Definitely no scooter no wheels here. I think speed is a red herring. Going slowly a child can still fall off and hit their head on the kerb with bad results.

It's not the speed on a scooter at that age. It's when the front wheels get stuck on something, or hit a kerb or a stick on the path, or when they are even stationary and lean forward and topple the scooter and the child goes over the front handlebars. That's why they need a helmet. My DD was scooting from age 2 and the only accidents she had was when she went over the front, never at great speed. She has been bike riding since 3yrs and zooms around so fast, the helmet is essential and I'm glad she was in the habit from a young age.

A friends 8yr old child went over the front of her scooter with no helmet and her facial injuries were horrible at the time. It's not worth it.

Always a helmet here, he's had a bad fall on concrete and would have really hurt his head if it wasn't for his helmet

DD hates hats and helmets but she has a backpack with a handle on which we can clip her in to then DH or I walk alongside holding the handle. That way if she falls we have hold of her backpack and can stop her hitting the ground!
