Does anyone have experience of taking a baby for a micturating cystogram (mcug)

My 5 month old is having an mcug soon following a hospital stay due to a urine infection. I am quite nervous so wondered if anyone can share their experiences?

Did you stay with your baby throughout?
Did they find the catheter painful?
Do they need to stay still under the fluoroscopy machine and how did you manage that? Do they restrain them?

My ds had an mcug at 4 months, it took a couple of minutes to insert the catheter and he cried but recovered within a minute or so. He lay on the bed and I just held his arms gently, so no real restraining needed.I stayed with him for the scan which just took a few minutes while they injected him with the dye and we had to wait for him to wee, which he did instantly, so all in all over pretty quickly and he lay there quite happily. I think I had to keep him still-ish, but he was fairly happy to lie there anyway. He didn't even notice the catheter her being removed. Good luck!

Yes my son has this last week at 20 months and before at 6 months for urine reflux.

Yes we stayed with him the whole time. It'll be worse for you than your dc.

When we had my sons mcug at our local hospital when he was 6 months we had to hold him still so they could catch his kidneys on X-ray. It only took about 10 mins. I recommend taking some teddies or a few toys to distract your baby. A good hospital should have these on standby anyway.

At my sons mcug last week at St Thomas's they played his favourite DVDs to distract him.

Your dc will probably cry when they fill the bladder but I think that's normal. The catheter shouldn't hurt - they put numbing cream on my son so he didn't feel it.

You can see the liquid on the X-ray when your dc wees so you get the results pretty much straight away.

It'll be fine, just keep relaxed on the day.
