What do I put new born baby to sleep in for for few months?

OK- so we have a cot (which apparently you can't put new born in as the wide open space freaks them out.
We have a 'Sleepyhead' and a 'Cocoona-baby' donated from sis.
But can you put that on the floor or does it need to sit on/in something?
Not sure whether we need to buy some kind of Moses basket or stand or...what?
Any tips? Don't want to spend money unnecessarily on something the baby has no intention of sleeping in!

p.s. its worth noting it's first baby and we have no clue....

Of course you can use a cot from birth. We had a crib for the first few months though.

My first was supposed to sleep in a crib, but slept in our bed.
My second slept in a sleepyhead on our bed (big bed), then sleepyhead in crib, then crib, then cot.

The cocoonababy blurb talks about putting it in a cot or crib so you could do that with yours.

We had the cot next to our bed with one side off so that it was like a giant side car... We then put the sleepyhead into it!

You can put them In cot alone fine. Or in cot inside sleepyhead, or in sleepyhead on your bed.

I wouldn't buy anything else, you already have three options

You can try them in the cot from birth- DS1 was fine in his from day 1. Some babies won't settle in cots or Moses baskets or anywhere but on you at first though: DS2 was like this but at 3 months he's in the cot properly. If you've got a sleepyhead I'd just put the baby in it in the cot. Moses basket seems unnecessary.

The advantage of Moses baskets is being able to get them close to the bed really. They don't last long though,
They can be moved and used downstairs which is also helpful

Sleepyhead in cot would be my suggestion. If they get used to sleeping in the sleepyhead it's fab as you can use it all round the house for their naps and instead of a travel cot when you go away. I was never comfortable putting it straight on the floor as I was worried i would tread on it in the night.

We used a Moba moses basket with stand for the first couple of months then DS went straight into his cotbed at the bottom of our bed. Once we're finished having babies I'll probably use the Moba as a washing basket.

Cocoonababy is awesome as it holds them in a comfortable position if they have colic, reflex or just seem agitated and we just had it on the floor for day naps and popped it into the cot beside us at night...I also have a sleepyhead for DC2 due in a few weeks so I will see what he prefers

We had a cosleeper which my baby would not use as it was too big for her. The bassinate for our pram was removable and suitable for over night sleeping so we used that unlike she very quickly became too long for it.

You can use a cot. I don't know who's said you "can't" - whether baby tolerates it is another story but certainly some of them do! :)

What I did was convert the cot to a sidecar - you can do it with most of them - and then put it back to being a normal cot later when I wanted to stop co-sleeping.

I never heard of a sleepyhead. Newborns are very portable. In Finland babies sleep on matress in a cardboard box. Provided the baby has a good quality firm matress they can sleep almost anywhere that isn't draughty. Ofcourse the baby might have his/her ideas about where they would like to sleep. Most babies have not read about the dangers of co sleeping. I used a Moses basket or the pram with my children.

Our baby napped in the sleepyhead on the floor in the living room, slept in it in his cot and used it in a travel cot when we went away. You don't need anything else.

It is not that it is bad it is just some babies get startle reflex (google it) if you ever see a new born baby sleep they twitch about and so if they have too much room can wake themselves up. Not ideal.for you when sleep is precious. Also some babies after being couped up in the womb cant settle in big spaces. Cocoona and sleepy head both help baby feel secure. And settle better.

Cocoona is fab for acidy or collicy babies as the slant it is on helps babies stomachs settle better. But as it is quite thick you need to put it in a cot or something with deep sides. You need sides higher than baby so wouldnt be able to put in moses basket or most cribs or cosleepers. As the sleepy heads flat you could though. You can also use sleepy head for longer to. Woth cocoona as babys straped in (swaddle belly band thing) once they start moving slightly you need to stop using it.

All these things thpugh about babies being unsettled etc are things swaddling can help with too. It is upto you what works but deffo worth giving them a try

Sleepyhead won't fit in a Moses basket, my friend used a travel cot in with sleepyhead in it for the first six months, one of those travel cots that has different height settings like a cot. Or if you can fit a normal cot in your room you could always use that with the sleepyhead.

Cocoonababy is supercomfy and the foam is quite rigid and will sit on any safe steady surface with a non-rolling newborn. This includes on your lap so you can soothe the baby to sleep and then pop them into the cot or onto your bed with zero disturbance. The Sleepyhead is floppy and won't allow you to do that as easily. I had the side off the cot, jammed it right up against our bed and the Cocoon or Sleepyhead in that, like an enormous co-sleeper. The Cocoonababy is apparently not licenced for night time sleeping which I didn’t know at the time. I loved it, as did DS. It will be time to switch away from it when your baby can roll. My little fellow is still in the Sleepyhead at 13 months.

Oh yes as Londoner says, swaddling is the other thing... I swaddled till 4 months with both the Cocoonababy and Sleepyhead. It is cosy and stops a sudden arm flail waking the infant.

As everyone has said babies are all different. One of mine loved the Moses basket, the other was meant to do same and ended up co-sleeping. They may be fine with the cot. One thing I couldn't have done without though is a good quality, reclined bouncy chair suitable for daytime sleeps.

Or like my baby would have preferred an entire king size bed to himself from birth!

All babies are different, don't worry it's trial and error. Something portable is ace. Moses basket on bathroom floor in first few weeks was the only way I could get a bath or shower !

Now if I could just find a solution to baby belting the inside of my ribs....!
