*Can anyone recommend a book about periods etc?*

My DD is 9 and although we've had a lot of chats about growing up I think she'd find a book useful. But there are dozens out there. One that covers not just the mechanics of periods etc but all the other stuff too - emotions, boys, bras, friendships etc - would be great. Any recommendations?

I bought a couple recently for my dd (but haven't got around to giving them to her because we haven't had the "conversation" yet ) - I'll them out and tell you what they are....

binker · 30/01/2007 10:45

'Have you started yet' by Ruth Thompson, published by Macmillan and illustrated by ME !
I know I'm biased but it has very good reviews !

Hi, I bought some really great books from Amazon about 6 months ago for my then 10 year old and she's found them really good, loads of information explained very clearly. I'll go and have a look and let you know the names of them..

chocolatebirdy · 30/01/2007 12:21

What age should i expect to have "that conversation"?

chocolatebirdy · 30/01/2007 12:22

Sorry about the hijack!

Great Browny, will look forward to hearing which ones they are, thanks

And Binker - I had that book when I was pre-teen! And it was great, v informative and girl-friendly, didn't know it still existed but will definitely look that out I think DD will need one like that and one about wider issues.

Batters, you're very welcome .

binker · 31/01/2007 10:21

Frenchleave - the book I illustrated was out a long time before I was comissioned to update it and that was some time ago now - to me it looks a bit dated, but that's from a self critical point of view and my illustration style has developed a lot since then ! I'd like to have another go at it !

welliemum · 31/01/2007 10:37

Wow, Binker!

I had that book too. It was great, answered a lot of questions I wondered about but wasn't sure how to ask.

frenchleave · 31/01/2007 11:53

Thanks Browny, that's fab.

The first two sound like the sort of thing she needs for general growing up issues (I think we'll skip the sex bit for now, she's a bit young to handle all that, nor is she very interested). Which do you think is the better of the two?

Chocolatebirdy - we had our first chat a couple of years ago, but it all depends on your daughter, how mature she is and how curious she is about that sort of stuff.

Frenchleave, well if you want to leave out the sex bit, my daughter said that Girls Only by Vic Parker is really good.

Personally, I though Growing Up, it's a Girl Thing by Mavis Jukes was really good and I know that Let's Talk About Sex by Robie H. Harris has won tonnes of awards. .

frenchleave · 01/02/2007 09:41

Great Browny, just the info I needed. Girls Only it is. And I'll keep a note of the other two for when she's ready for the next stage

Thanks for your help!
