we're having parents over at weekend before ds birthday, what do most people do;
leave presents to be opened on actual birthday or open them before?
i know it may sound trival, but i just wanted to know what other people did as i thought that they should be saved for the birthday and my dh said they could be opened when given.

For birthdays we have always let DD open her presents when given. This year her party (5th) will be almost 2 weeks before her birthday, because we are going away. She will be allowed to open any presents she gets then that day. Grandparents, etc are coming over the weeknd we get home from holiday - 3 days after her birthday - and she will have their gifts then.

When DD was 3 I had to work on her birthday, so we moved her whole birthday celbrations to the day before and treated that as the special day!

With ds just 1 I would open presents when given. Most of the pleasure is seeing their reaction to a new toy or whatever. As they get older there is huge excitement factor of having a pile of presents and I would save them but for now I would let grandparents have the pleasure of opening them with him.
