My Ds is 8yrs old, he is doing brilliantly in school, is well behaved and a great boy.....

The question I have is what time does everyone else put their 8 yr old to bed. My ds goes to bed around 8 and then is allowed to sit in bed watching tv until he falls asleep, which sometimes is 10pm. To me this is ok but a lot of my friends put their children to bed much earlier......oddly enough when he goes to bed early he has a bad bad day in school. the earlier he goes to bed the earlier he gets up which can be as early as 5am......

ds1 who is nearly 8yo goes to bed at 8.30 and is asleep by 9pm, have tried to get him to bed earlier but he still doent go to sleep til 9pm, so we dont push the issue with him too much, ds2 who i nearly 3yo and has no nap during the day goes to bed between 5.30 and 6.30 depending on how tired he is.

if my SD was living with us - in the week she would be in bed at 8pm and lights out at 8.30pm....but cos she doesnt live with me she is here at weekends, she is in bed at 8pm and lights out at 9pm - 9/10 she is flat out by 8.30pm

but she told me that she is awake till 10pm at her nannys or at home but she is ratty as hell the next day (she had gone to bed late once and never again - she was sssooo naughty!! and she is an angel)

I have an 8 year old boy - he reads in bed until I am ready to read to him at 8pm. I read to him for half an hour and then it is lights out. If he cannot settle he is allowed to read some more but until no later than 9pm. In the morning he has to check the clock when he wakes. If it is before 7am he can play or read quietly in his room until 7am. He can make himself breakfast if he is hungry before 7.30am.

Hana,
i have already stated he has no problems in school. he is top of the class for most of his subjects....so just what is too late?????????

guess i am an odd parent lol.
When ds wakes up he doesn't have to stay in his room he is free to get up and go into the living room to watch tv or read, play, whatever he wants to do as long as he doesn't make too much noise. I guess i have never been strict on bedtimes etc. He knows his boundaries and is well behaved....I don't have many rules just that he give me the respect he wants back.

umm
didn't you ask for opinions?
gave mine
but you don't seem to have any problems with it
so no problem

Sossy · 30/01/2007 00:29

It does seem late but like you say if there's no problem why change it? The only concern I'd have is the TV, not only being worried about what violence he may be exposed to at that time on TV but also the radiation waves coming from the set. How long is the set left on for and is he a good distance away from it?

MejustMe · 31/01/2007 11:09

sossy,
Ds's tv only plays dvds, and the only thing he watches is Dr Who he is addicted to it lol. He is on his top bunk with the tv at the other end to his head.

Why the hell does your ds have a tv that does anything in his room.
Surely a bedroom can be sacred to sleep.
My dd1 soon to be 8 is miles off having a tv in her room. If she has trouble settling down I go in and attend to her.
