Phonics test year 1

Did your child pass or fail the phonics test?

I'm emotional today re a failed test. And putting all blame on me being a working mum. Need reassurances that is is stupid and I'm not failing as a mother! X

25% of the boys in our school failed. My son did well though. I hate that they are labelled "failed". But at least a lower mark identifies a need that can (and I'm sure will) be rectified next year ready for SATS.

August born son passed. I think largely down to school though. Very large state school but pass rate was 93%

Really don't worry about it. The test is out of 49 words and the children have to read 32 correct to pass. There's a massive difference between children who read just one or two words correctly who failed and a child who scored 31 and just missed the cut off. I've had children in my class before who read really well and have failed the test either because the test situation throws them or they make little mistakes such as reading the letters in the wrong order.
You are definitely not a failing mum. If he failed because he got a really low score and struggles with reading then he'll get extra support in year 2 with reading. If he only just failed and you know that he reads ok then just ignore the test result

As Sarah said I think it just means they'll get extra phonics sessions in year 2 . My son got 40 out of 40 but I can honestly say it's nothing at all to do with any input from me, I wouldn't have a clue where to start with it.
They all get there in their own time the test is just to see who needs a little extra help. You certainly aren't a failing mother.

It's not down to parenting (not in my case anyway) I didn't have a clue about it and ds got 39/40. Lots of kids in his class didn't pass either so I really don't think it's any parenting thing. He'll catch up next year

My daughter failed. Teacher said it was because her reading was already at a much higher level and the phonics didn't make sense to her. Teacher told me not to worry about it so I never gave it another thought.

Don't guilt trip yourself about it.
