Bloss - exactly the same problem here with my 4yo DS!

I'd like to know what or who he's dreaming of

Like your DS he is also in such a deep sleep it is often impossible to get him to do a wee. This is made worse by his insistence that he will not sit down to wee - must be standing up and of course he is so groggy he just staggers around or his legs buckle under him!

We put him back into nappies for a while - just wasn't worth making him feel like he as failing. At his insistence we tried again recently and he was better and managed to stay dry for the first couple of nights but then lost it again. We're back in nappies again for now with the promise to him that we'll try again in a few weeks time. He just gets sooo crestfallen when he has wet the bed that it doesn't seem fair to him to keep going if he's really not ready for it.

I'm not sure whether it is related but the rising boys book does say that they get an adrenalin surge at this age. I'm hoping in a while things will settle down and lifting him will be easier.

Soapbox · 05/06/2004 13:10

Whoops freudian slip there - should have said raising boys not rising boys

codswallop · 05/06/2004 13:11

we called pull ups " mickey pants"

this change in terminlogoy made a difference

he also put them on himself

papillon · 05/06/2004 13:14

my sisters boy is a similar age and she gets him up round 1am to go to the toilet. Will ask her if she has similar problems.

Could you limit his near-bedtime drinks more, Bloss?
I thought the erection thing-upon waking up only happened when they had a very full bladder, but maybe not!

Bloss easy up pants are very absorbant perhaps try them, we had tehm ith pants over the top we also lifted at night and after a couple of weeks it all was fine if he feels ready then nappies would be a backward step

codswallop · 06/06/2004 21:43

oky dokey

asked dh today and he says You push the willly down att he base and that reduces the erection and makes them wee.

hw says they are symtomatic of a full bladder but are just also part of sleeping

Pullups are fine for over night - used then for both DS1 & (currently) DS2. They are good because they can be pulled up and don if he gets up in the night for a wee but will hold any accidents. We call then "bedtime pants". DS2 is only 3 and I have no intention of night training him just yet! In fact, I didn't night train DS1 at all, he simply declared one night that he was going to bed in pants that night and as the pullups were usually dry I let him. DS2 will get the same deal - I'd rather leave him than go though all the palava of wet beds and "lifting" (TBH, I don't understand the point of lifting but whatever works for you!).

Can't help with getting him thru the night without a wee, but instead of pull-ups try dry-nites. Ds wears them (4 & 3/4), and they NEVER Leak! He can put them on himself too.

He occasionally try qwithout, but ds gets really upset if he's wet, so keep going back to dry-nites atm
