Hmm. Know the feeling! Equally broke especially as no bursary this year. Portfolio is stressing me out. Have been having 1 assignments due in a month since sept and therefore not been able to do anything about my portfolio and now it's less than a month before its due in and its empty and I've got to write the most horrendous reflections ever to go in them.
Last placement everyone seemed to think I was the most stupid and inadequate student they'd ever met. Only 3 wks left on delivery suite to prove them all wrong about ths.
Otherwise loving the course

Indith · 19/01/2007 19:44

Course? I'm doing a course? Oh...........yeah.........forgot about that......... Actually have a translation due in Monday, technically anyway. You think 'I had a baby over the holidays' is a good enough excuse?

Lectures next week, or at least I keep telling myself that. Got to get expressing and convince Ds that the bottle is ok though, unless anyone knows how to make Dp lactate....no? oh well.

MamaMaiasaura · 19/01/2007 19:49

Well I'm doing an OU literature degree and to speed things up I'm doing a french course. My next lit course starts on Feb 3rd. Meanwhile for my first French assignment I got 94% and for the second 100%. I'm so chuffed. Maybe I should have done a language degree instead lol!

TheArmadillo · 19/01/2007 19:53

aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Had so much work to do over the holidays. HAven't got it done as spent so much time being ill. That's not even to mention the dissertation.

Back on Monday and essay due in.

Crap

(its my final year and its so much stress)

MamaMaiasaura · 19/01/2007 19:53

Belgian - handy tip with portfolio paperwork - type up on word and print on competencies sheets - it saves so much time. YOu can also then re-use some of the references on future placements.

I qualified in Oct (go my first post starting soon) so understand what a drag it can be and happy to offer what support I can

I took 2 years out of uni (left b4 got pregnant and went back when ds was a year old) and I know another student on my course took a year out to have her ds (he was born at beginning of academic year) and we both found that it took a while to get back into it, but once we did it was fine and we are both doing really well.

Both agreed though that going back b4 dc's a year old would have been really difficult.

It all depends on you though - for both of us it was our first and so a bit of a shock to the system

Fio! Congrats- thats fab

bit rocky at mo, tbh. I had to 'dump' my group of so called mates coz I had enough fo being bullied- suddenly people are talking to me again . Sitting near otehr people, I ahve relaissed how much their constant bitching and chatting is alienating everyone and glad I got out in time (its a religion course, so they yell 'they're all bloody amd' or 'they're all satanic' intermittently in every lesson).

Trying to arrange a placement too, Uni refuused to give any help or leeway and finding someone willing to accept me doing child friendly hours (DS1 is sn and needs to be dropped at school) isn't easy, not when they've got 2000 or so students competing who can do anything they want. AS Lecturer says, no placement no degree.

MamaMaiasaura · 19/01/2007 20:27

aww peachy - that is crappy about the child friendly hours. I meet with deputy head of cohort and she was really helpful and arranged community placements in my final year as I had childcare issues. I also extended course by 4 weeks to allow me to cath up on hours. Sounds like your tutor is being a bit unhelpful. I would speak to someone higher up.

TheArmidillo - are you doing a nursing course? I think I heard something about maternity benefits but dont know if that is just for midwifery

Sally - totally understand the looking formward ot placement. There is so much paperwork and so little patient contact.

TheArmadillo · 19/01/2007 20:30

I'm doing history course. I get a Parents Learning Allowence as part of my loan. I know you can claim help with childcare costs as well, but ds is looked after by family.

Sorry Fio forgot to say congratulations

Awen. Thanks for the tip, but I think our portfolio must be looking a bit different from yours, 'cos I'm not sure what you mean with a competency sheet. We've got a proforma with clinical incident, rationale for claimed learning and competencies to be claimed to fill in for the extra evidence (you know study days and the like)
Are you a midwife of a nurse?

MamaMaiasaura · 19/01/2007 23:50

NUrse - they may have changed paperwork again... they do it alot

Know what you mean when you say that everyone is counting on us, Sally. I feel like I would really let down my whole family if I were to fail or drop out. That's the only reason I'm still on the course.

Upsadaisy · 21/01/2007 20:56

Just finished shift. I've not long started on this ward so i'm a newbie again, which I don't find easy.....I'm a quiet person. Does anybody else studying nursing find it awkward starting a new placement or is it just me who is incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together?....I speak complete gibbereish when meeting new people i.e. staff, I'm currently doing my community placments so am here there and everywhere until April. My current placement is not what I want to do either...interesting but not me.

Belgianmama - Oh no....just think 3 weeks left and your done. You won't have to see those people again. They sound pretty tactless!

Indith - Wish I knew how to make men lactate....I would be rich and could be a lady of leisure

Awen - Thank you very much. I've not long started my 2nd year.

Marslady - Wowwww!!!! Well Done You!!!! How did you celebrate?

TheArmadillo - Hows your essay going? Will you beable to ask for an extension?

FioFio - Congratulations!!!

Sallystrawberry - I'm with you there on the no motivation. I have more motivation to do my ironing at the moment and potter round the house and garden (though would never admit it to dp) than I have to study....oh my word, I called it my ironing....look what studying has reduced me to. I have competency sheets like you...well done for getting most signed off. Are you working with your mentor mostly? Due to childcare I'm not and am finding it difficult to get things signed...frustrating.

Peacheychair - Thats terrible...agree with Awen...it may be beneficial to speak to someone higher up.

Kama - What are you studying?
