9 year dd getting ears pierced - Where to go ?

We have agreed she can have them done at long last-after much peer pressure. Many of her friends had it done years ago. Where is the best place to have it done and what are most schools policies on earrings?

Clair's accessories is a good place to go, although some hairdressers do them aswell.

We had a letter home, last year from our school saying that if you are getting your childs ears pierced would you kindly wait until the 6 weeks holiday, so on their return to school they can remove them for PE.

My dd is having them done, this year, I will wait until the holidays.

Our school sounds similar to gold123's in that they have to be removed for PE and swimming - therefore if they have to sit out on these lessons if they cannot remove them - my dd has often asked if she can have hers done but at 7 I think she is too young to be able to remove them and look after them herself.

Yeah I thought that about the holidays. Her birthday is June 12th and I stupidly said we would go on the day Perhaps will have to postpone although I'm sure that will cause major sulk. How old is your dd ?

I would personally recommend H.Samuel, afaik they still do ear piercing? It has been 13 years since I had mine done lol

They were great. Made sure I knew how to look after them properly/clean them properly etc

Slinky · 01/06/2004 21:35

My DD1 had hers done at the beginning of the summer holidays so that she didn't have to keep taking them out for swimming/PE etc.

Agree that you should ensure that proper gold earrings are used.

I used an independent jewellers in my town who were excellent - rather reluctant to use our local Claire's Accessories - girls working there look young enough to be my daughter so not keen to let them loose on my DD1s ears

Hulababy · 01/06/2004 21:36

The girls in places like Claire's have very little training - so ask for one who has worked there a while. My sister worked in somewhere similar and was piercing ears on her first day!

my dd 5, had hersdone at claires assesories i think its really good because you go back after 6 weeks so they can checkthem and they are really child friendly.

hi!! agree if you go with claires accesories, ask them for the person who has had proper training, check certificates too. I was trained and use the same system that they use in claires (studex) and the earings come in sterile packs with all the bits needed (adapter etc) this ensures all the parts that touch the ear are only used by each person and then thrown away. There is also a aftercare sheet with info that you may forget. you should also get a bottle of solution to take home.

I;ve told my 6 year old she has to wait til she's at least 13. Do you think I'll make it that far??!! The nagging's started already!

I was 18 so I think 13 is more than generous!

JulieF · 30/06/2004 15:59

I had mine done at age 11 but my mum refused to take me (she would have passed out, never took me for any jabs either lol!). I had them done at a local hairdressers as they were the only place that accepted my 16 year old cousin as someone OK to authorise it.

I would agree that it is best to wait until the 6 week holiday. At my primary school we only had 5 weeks and you had to miss break and PE if you couldn't take them out. At high school they let you put plasters over your ears for PE.
