First writing materials?

My DS is 15 mo. He always wants to take our pens and pencils when we are writing but I don't really want to let him run around with them (he stills puts things in his mouth). Most crayons say from 3 yo however. So what did you use as the first writing materials for your children? Any you would recommend?

My son had a set of crayons first pens at about that ages. They are felt tips but with a stubby end so easy to 'write' whatever angle you hold them at.

However he only used them (and still at 4.5) when he's sat at the table. I would pop him in his high chair for drawing then.

Not just putting them in his mouth but your walls too!

In the high chair is the plan here as well :D. I just want something safe even if he puts them in his mouth! What brand were yours?

Mine just had pencils (quite fat ones so easy to hold) and a lot less problems if they draw on the walls.
