my 16 week old been diagnosed with with eczema and waiting on an emergency dermatologist appointment. the doctor told me to go back if I get worried. well as it's Sunday they ain't open so I phoned the 111 service. should I just gone straight to the walk in with him or wait till they call me back?

it's suddenly gone very red and angry. he won't stop scratching. it's the worst he's been and I'm worried.

my gs`s eczema was hot,red and swollen after playing floor hockey. dreading the effect of summer heat on him. There can be very dangerous results from eczema ,so take him to the dr if you are worried.

Where is the eczema and what creams are you using? Slather on a thick ointment if you've got it and cut his nails short so he can't do too much damage. If the eczema is on a limb and you have some tubigrip, put on a thick layer of ointment and then the tubigrip on top. That should see him through to tomorrow. If no tubigrip, close fitting stretchy cotton clothes should help.

Can you give the appropriate dose of antihistamine to help in the short term?
Also if its hot where you are, keep him as cool as possible, fan, cotton clothes etc.

I'm using hydrocortisone cream once daily then epaderm cream throughout the day. I've stripped him down to his nappy all day and put scratch mittens on him. all windows are open to keep him cool as possible.

never thought of antihistamines. I'll pick some up tomorrow/ask the doctor tomorrow.

Persil non bio, not fairy, synalar c cream followed by a milder steroid cream and aveeno is what the dermatologist gave to sort my son's awful eczema out

I'm using comfort pure, fairy non bio, tried aveeno cream didn't even touch the sides.

Aveeno no good for my DS although some swear by it - different skin types suit different creams and it is just a case of trial and error.
Epaderm cream (the one in the pump dispenser not the thick goo in the tub) is fab for my DS. You need to slather it on as thickly as possible in the direction of hair growth ie down the body, several times a day.
We use Surcare washing powder. All the perfumed ones irritate.
You may well need a steroid cream to get on top of it, hopefully your GP can advise but unfortunately in my experience they can be a bit useless when it comes to eczema, in the end it took a trip to a private consultant to get on top of things.

The trouble with eczema is that everyone's reacts differently to different creams and regimes.

Dd1 (mild) is better with 2 baths a week, eczmol cream.
Dd2 (more severe) daily baths with oilatum, dermol, hydrocortisone
I (mild with flare ups in the summer) use aqueous cream to wash, daily baths followed by dermol and hydrocortisone)

We all take antihistamines and I find best washing clothes regime is using powder in a hot wash with a long rinse (liquid and cooler wash means machine clogs up, clothes don't clean properly and washing product builds up), avoiding fabric conditioner (which can irritate the skin)

Anyway, like I say, different things work for different people. I really hope you fined something that works for your little one.

I had crazy eczema growing up and my parents took me to a herbalist. Now this might seem silly, but it worked for me!
Get some porridge oats and put them in a pair of tights. Then hold it under the tap while you draw a bath. You can squeeze the excess in to the water afterwards as well. Pat dry though afterwards don't rub.
It will change bright red itchy skin overnight. Let me know if you try it.

Oats in the bath is often recommended on mumsnet, just be warned it can also cause irritation!

My DD alsit has eczema. We tried a LOT of creams but none really keeps it away for good. You have to try and find what triggers it. In my case her eczema was triggered by food allergies ( milk allergy mainly) and sometimes their allergies start showing after a few months from birth. My DD was fine till 2.5 mo so that might be worth considering. If you are breastfeeding it might be worth giving up dairy , it takes 2,3 weeks to get out of your sistem. When mi DD gets a bad flare up we use skin salvation by pure potions which you can find at Holland and Barret. It doesn't smell great, it stains clothes over time and is very greasy , we only use it at night and morning. During the day normal not so thick moisturizer as the weather is wormer and use oilatum in bath. Creams and water softener , ecologic detergent and fabric softener, socks or mittens , moisturizer etc helps. If is really bad and not on the face you could try wet wrapping as well.
Good luck, it is frustrating and it might take a while until you find what works for you or what causes it but it will get better xx

we're using a very mild steroid once daily for 1 week to see how it goes. also giving him bath daily with aveeno bath oil as they won't give me nothing different. he's loving being naked everytime he has a bath xD.

I use to have flare ups and we founds that washing powder was what caused it. I also mentioned allergy to milk (he's ff) but he's on the cow and gate comfort for colic, but the docs said to keep him on it as the dermatologist might change his milk.

Leave at least a half hour gap between the steroid and epiderm cream, else the emollient will dilute the steroids.

To be honest you would be fine using it morning and night and moisturise inbetween. Don't be scared of the steroid. We had different ones for different parts of my DS's body and face. Piriton at night too to help sleep, has to be prescribed at that age. You cannot over moisturise.

I found the GP to be useless with childhood eczema. It wasn't until we saw a dermatologist that his skin improved within days.

I came to suggest an oat bath too, same method as mentioned by a PP.
it really worked on my Dd, along with copious amounts of diprobase.

Porridge oats made my dd's excess worse I am afraid so as pp said, be careful.

I second keeping his nails really short, the dermatologist also said to file them so no sharp corners etc. Keep his cool and use piriton. Drs can only prescribe the recommended dose but specialist upped dd to fill adult doses (2.5) and her night time dose is more than that.

Please don't use tubagrip as a wrap. It it's too restrictive. If he is having issues at night, soak leggings and a close fitting cotton t shirt in warm water and wrong out, dress him in them before putting him to bed and if cooler out dry ones over the top (I just put dd to bed in the damp layers) hopefully it will help stop his skin drying out.

I have also foam that e45 junior bath milk for dry and itchy skin is great.

Re washing, make sure that you wash his stuff completely seperatly and at 60. Once it has finished out it on a rinse cycle to wash out all the laundry stuff. Even non bio sets dd off. Also fabric softener can set kids off so try not using that as well.

Dermatologist gave dd synalar for her face and elecon for her torso and I kid you not she went from open weeping shin to clear skin in 4 days. Good luck with his referral

I'm lucky my Dr has been really helpful. I saw her yesterday and she gave him piriton. also antifungal for his Bum as he's all of a sudden got a rash down there and she thinks it's time do with his eczema. also I told her I still haven't had an appointment from the dermatologist and she wasn't happy.

I phoned the dermatologist team this morning and he has been put as urgent but they haven't got a date cause it needs to go through booking which is another day of him being irritable.

I'm letting him sleep in thin clothing with the windows open so it's cool in his room so he doesn't sweat. I've filed his nails as he won't keep still enough for me to cut them.

Have you tried using natural remedies . My son has issues with oil or any oily base stuff.

I used coconut oil on his cradle cap and it was amazing- it cleared it straight away. It just didn't work on his body.

My cousin made her own as she didn't want her daughter using steroid cream from a young age so she made a cream. organic coconut oil, organic sheer butter and wipped it and add lavender essential oil about 10 drops (use a mixer or hand mixer) it helped her lil girl..

I did try using coconut oil based stuff but it didn't do him much good. works for me though.

When my DS was a baby he also had bad eczema. He has now thankfully largely grown out of it, except for the occasional flare ups when he eats to much sugary stuff. Eucerin cream with Urea worked very well for him.

you'd think if it's been wrote down as urgent it wouldn't have took them this LO g to sort it out.

had another doctors appointment today for my son and she's gave him pepti milk for him to try.

also finally got his hospital appointment for a week Monday.
