dr Browns bottles, are they worth it?

Hi all! My DS 2 is 3 weeks old and suffering from colic really badly. The health visitor has recommended cow & gate comfort milk, which hasn't made any improvement. I'm currently using the regular tommee tippee bottles, however, I'm thinking of changing to dr Browns bottles if they work. I'll try anything to try and put a stop to the endless screaming and crying.

Has anyone ever used these and are they worth it? Or does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm getting desperate.

I would try buying one and seeing if it makes much difference. Although my health visitor said mothers try all sorts and then magically it stops at 12 weeks (not helpful)!!

How often are you winding the baby?

I always found that the ready made cartons of milk were easier on the digestive system of mine

Warm water is good

In my experience yes, put my son on them at about 6 weeks and they made a huge difference. Took him off at 13 months and swapped for a basic bottle for the couple of bottles he had, ended up going back and buying Dr Browns again as he got the colic back.

It really helped us, the difference was amazing. Buy one or two before you invest too much. Be prepared for lots of fiddly cleaning of all the little bits though.

I've got 3 DCs, 3 and under and all have/are using Dr Brown bottles. They have all been been badly tongue tied and had to express for them so got lots of fiddly bits to wash.

I've always just out everything in the dishwasher and its cleaned it all fine - never had any upset tummies. Our dishwasher has an additional
Sterilisation programme so I run that too. But if you were worried, you could put the stuff through the steriliser after the dishwasher. A lot if people are put off Dr Brown's due to the fiddly washing so dishwasher saves a lot if time

I couldn't bf with my ds and he was bad with colic. I starred with Tommy tippee and switched to MAM anti colic bottles, I looked at dr brown bottles but I'd read such good reviews about MAM I got one to try and ds took to it really well and no colic!! :) of II were you I'd just buy one of your preferred and see how it goes, you may need to try a couple of different ones to see which is best for your DS

Before I tried the comfort milk, he was on normal first milk (aptamil) and we were using the ready made cartons/bottles.

I wind him in between a feed (sometimes several times) and afterwards. It seems to be worse at night. We use in infacol before a feed too.

Also, we've found that he will start sucking on the bottle, splutter, cry and look like he's in pain. Then when we wind him he looks like he's really uncomfortable. Sometimes though, he will have around an ounce, no problem, get wind up and then as soon as you put him down he wakes and starts crying because he's still hungry and then demolishes another ounce or too. So I'm not sure whether he's having to suck too hard on the teats and it's tiring him out.

I shall buy one of the dr brown bottles, thank you for your responses. It's worth giving them a go, at the minute I'll try anything. My DS1 is one and never had this problem, so I feel like I don't know what to do.

Luc- I've tried the Mam ones without any success. We had some unused ones left which we had bought for DS1, but DS2 refuses to take these

I think they are brilliant! I used them for both DC , we found the cheapest set was from john Lewis , 5 bottles and they came with the steriliser for £50 I think. Neither of my DC had any trouble with wind or colic but can't guarantee it was the bottles as we never used anything other than dr brown

Amazing bottles!

Some people moan about the mess - they leak etc. They don't. BUT the trick is...don't make up your feed actually in one of the bottles. Use say a Tommee Tippee bottle with a lid to do the mixing and shaking etc. Once it's made, pour it into the DB bottles.

Also, if you're out travelling etc...take hot hot water with you in a flask (tommee tippee is good) , some empty bottles and some previously boiled cool water with you in bottles - again, Tommee Tippee ones with lids. Let's say you need a 6 oz feed....Pour 3oz of hot hot water into a bottle...add 6 scoops of powder...shake (the hot water kills the bacteria in the powder) and then add 3 oz of cool water (ie make it up to the right amount on the side of the bottle). Once all shaken up (in the TT bottle with a lid on!) pour into your empty DB bottle.

Voila! Feed at correct temperature and made correctly/safely.

Top tip! They will explode if shaken like a normal bottle when making up a feed! They MUST be stirred with the Ben bring tube rather than shaking!

If he wants more food after a feed he may be sucking for comfort as his tummy is uncomfortable . His tummy is still pretty small - golf ball size , and some colicky babies get caught in a cycle . Try keeping him upright after a feed for at least 30 mins .
Colic is horrid and does tend to peak in the evenings.

They're wonderful. Made a massive difference to us.
