What time does your 10 year old go to bed?

DD1 who will be 11 in October has started complaining that her bedtime is earlier than all her friends. This is undeniably true and I have accepted that things need to change but her friends seem to stay up until what to me is unacceptably late at that age - she's getting texts from them at past 11 o'clock. I could do with a little guidance on what is regarded as reasonable at that age. I know all children are different and some need more sleep than others but I'm interested in whether there's a rough consensus.

My DS who will be 11 in July goes to bed between 8.30 and 9pm. He's usually asleep around 9.30pm and awake between 6.30-7am.

lavendersun · 11/04/2016 08:56

Just 10 here, bed by 9-9:30 on a school night although not always asleep for another hour. I wake her up at 7 if she isn't up already.

My nearly 12 year old is in bed for 9pm on a school night.

DS is in bed around 8 and allowed his iPod until 8.30 then usually reads til 9 but it can take til 9.30 before he's asleep, this is on a school night. At weekends its around 10-10.30 when he goes to sleep.

deepdarkwood · 11/04/2016 09:07

Dd is just ten & in bedford 8:30, lights out at 9 on a school night - officially. Ds at just 12 is half an hour later. My two are larks though so won't necessarily go to sleep quickly and won't wake up until dragged out if bed most days!

Sgtmajormummy · 11/04/2016 09:13

DD (just 10) starts winding down at 9. We aim for bed at 9.30 but if the book we're reading together is exciting it can stretch to 9.45.
She's up at 7.15. That's approximately 9 hours' sleep and she's thriving.

parissont · 11/04/2016 09:14

Dd is about to be 10. 8.30 bed usually asleep v quickly and up at 7

parissont · 11/04/2016 09:16

Oh and no ipod in bed.

DS2 will be 11 in October. He goes up to bed at 8, and lights out 8.30 or 8.45 at latest. He wakes any time between 6 & 7 naturally, but has to be up at 6.45 some school days to go to CM.

DD is 12 she goes up at 8.30 and lights out about 9, she is a night owl though and will still be awake at 11 some nights! She has to get up at 6.15 to catch the school bus.

DS1 is 13, he goes up any time between 9 & 9.45. Lights out usually about 10 or 10.15. He again needs to be up at 6.15 for the school bus.

They all go to bed earlier than a lot of their friends!

According to the NHS, a 10 yo needs 9 hours 45 mins and an 11 yo 9 hours 30 mins.www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Childrenssleep/Pages/howmuchsleep.aspx

No electronics in bedrooms etc. just night owls unfortunately

bringonyourwreckingball · 11/04/2016 11:38

Thanks, that's helpful. We currently do upstairs/pyjamas/teeth around 8/8:15, in bed for 8:30, lights out by 9. It has actually been slipping later but mainly because she faffs. She has to be up by 7 in the morning.

Oldmotherhen · 11/04/2016 11:52

10 year old DS goes to bed at 8.30, usually reads for a bit and is asleep by 9.30 and wakes up himself between 7 and half past. He will be 11 in June.

Chasethechaser · 11/04/2016 11:53
