How much do you talk to your kids?

Just wondering how much you talk to your kids? Do you constantly talk to them, or are you quiet a lot with them? Are you the one who explains things to them and answers all their questions or is it dad who does that?

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a lot to say to my kids. I don't have interesting stories to tell them, I am not really creative to make up stories and I can't even answer all of their questions because I don't know the answers. But my husband is awesome, he can tell them so many things and is very creative with his stories. I just feel like they are not going to develop a close bond with me because of this.

Just talk to them, children are usually utterly mundane, they just like chatting, you don't have to wow them with facts or thrilling stories, they just love to hear you voice.

I make a virtue of the stuff I don't know, and say we'll have to look it up /find out/work it out.

But kids honestly don't care about interesting. DS1 is 4 and was helping me make a bolognese the other day. We nattered about the ingredients and then got into where they all came from and which one had come the furthest. It wasn't terribly interesting but he loves the interaction.

If you don't feel creative you can get the kids to tell the story. 'Hey look at this stick, it's a funny shape. Where do you think it came from?' And get the kids to make up a story by just asking them the next question.

I think what children really want is to be listened to. I talk loads to mine but have to be careful not switch off when they're talking to me! If you're not a natural talker but you listen and give them lots of cuddles, your bond will be fine.

Mine used to love (& still do ) stories of the family when young, silly things we did/said, places we went. They love hearing about the adults in their lives as children themselves it helps them find their place in the family timeline. As mine got older they used to love hearing about themselves as babies, and you'll have loads of things to talk to them about that !
