basically that. he keeps crying, has a stuffy nose, seems to be warm and very irritable. is there anything I can do?

also he keeps straining but he's on the comfort milk.

Snuffle babe for the stuffy nose (like Vicks but for babies). Steam can help too - pop baby in bouncy chair in the bathroom while you have a hot shower.

how can I help him sleep. he only seems to sleep for half an hour then he's up crying. he's never been a crying baby.

unfortunately I can't get out to get some snuffle baby and DP is out without his car and I don't drive.

Could you raise the head end of his mattress slightly, so that he's not totally horizontal when laid down? It should make him less congested.

JassyRadlett · 29/03/2016 22:50

Do you have a snot sucker or saline nose spray/drops? Those helped DS2 the most when he had a cold at 4 weeks.

Agree on steam and propping up the mattress, it makes a huge difference to them. Also put a damp towel over the radiator as a makeshift humidifier.

Poor wee soul - hope you got some sleep and he feels better today. It's difficult when they are tiny because there isn't much you can do. Mine always seem to have a cold, spend a fortune on Snufflebabe...

Ahappynewmummy · 30/03/2016 07:45

he's been waking every 2 hours so I'm shattered but at least he got some form of sleep.

he seems to have a clearer nose but that's while he's sleeping so once he wakes up I'll know how he's feeling

Ours got his first cold at 5 months last week from sils baby's christening

It went on four days day 1/2 being worst. Things that helped were - steamy shower with two drops eucalyptus oil on tissue on radiator , sniffle babe rub, snot sucker,Plenty of breastmilk, two doses of calpol on the first day.

Ahappynewmummy · 30/03/2016 08:00

if I could I would have gave him calpol but the doctor told me not to. ooh just kept saying take him to the walk in (which I couldn't as DP was at work) and I didn't think it was bad enough to go there either. they wouldn't be able to help me any more than they could over the phone.

Vics on their feet at night seems to help and lots of steam. No point giving him calpol unless he has a temp or is obviously in pain.

Why can't you take him out if DP is at work?

Ahappynewmummy · 30/03/2016 08:21

I don't drive and I don't have no family to take me. I only phoned them up to help me what to do till the docs opened today.

Mine woke every two hours at that age even when he didn't have a cold Sad

A tip the Health Visitor gave me was to put some Snufflebabe or Vicks on me (on neck or round collarbone) then when baby was feeding it wafted down and cleared his nose so he could feed properly.

Ahappynewmummy · 30/03/2016 08:38

I think I'm going to get some today. before his cold he was going to bed at 7 had a dream feed at half 10 then didn't wake up till 5 or 6 so it's a shock to the system ti be waking up every 2 hours haha

Yes calpol pointless without obvious temp or pain. In our case we didn't know f he had a sore throat and wasn't sure how to find out. He seemed very distressed so we gave him calpol. He became not distressed and slept within 10/12 minutes. It helped the overall picture.

Ahappynewmummy · 30/03/2016 10:30

he's still smiling and laughing so I got to be grateful there. he doesn't seem to be bothered by it thank God.
