I dropped the baby

We just moved to a new country and yesterday I dropped our 9 wk old baby. I tripped on my flip flop, up the stairs, and she hit the back of her head on a step. I'm in shock myself and can't remember exactly what and how it happened. But it was quite a fall onto marble floor.

She cried immediately, no vommiting, bump went down with ice at the hospital, and no loss of consciousness. Her eyes seem alert and normal when she is awake. Hospital sent is home last night as told to monitor her for 24 hours.

However, she's quite a sleepy baby anyway. I'm sat here with her dozing on me and I can't stop worrying about internal bleeding, should I go back and push for a ct scan? I know they carry their own risks but at least we'd know she's ok.

Has anyone been in a similar situation that can offer any advice or reassurance?

Oh mama great big hug, how scary for you both!

You are both probably exhausted so some sleep will do you good, did they advise about how long to let her sleep for?

I would monitor her - breathing, colour, responsiveness - and if she changes then go back/call an ambulance

Yes with a one week old baby on a wooden floor. My little baby cried immediately. I called an ambulance and and all the hospital staff were so lovely. I was a teary mess. Many of them had also dropped their children at one point! That child is now 13 and super bright and physically able

Yes indeed. With an 8 week old onto hard floor. I still have no clear idea what happened. I can tell you everything up to the point then everything after but the actual fall is a blur.

We had a week long stay as i actually broke her a tiny bit. BUT whilst in hospital she rolled onto front and at subsequent development check she was marked as a 8-9month old at 5 months

Be kind to yourself. Its an awful feeling, i know.

Thank you all for the kind replies. It is truly horrendous and being in a foreign country is making it all the scarier. I just want the next few day to pass so that we know she's alright... Waiting and monitoring is so hard, especially with a baby so young as her behaviour was a bit erratic to begin with.

Yes we've all been there - among just al my friends each one has dropped a baby at some point.

Is there a parent who hasn't dropped their baby?
It was an accident and you are bound to feel shaken up. I'm sure she is fine :)

No experience but just wanted to give ypu these as can imagine how scary it was. Am sure your precious baby will be fine. Sorry this happened.

Thanks everyone. It is terrifying. But reassuring to know I'm not the only one who has done this. She seems ok this morning, but it happened at 5pm yesterday so I'll feel easier later today once the 24hours have passed

I feel for you OP and your post reminds me EXACTLY how it felt when I tipped 6 week old DA out I his car seat onto a hard floor.

He's a massive rugby playing 13 yo now. I do joke that he can be slightly potty due to me dropping him as a baby though.

We all do it. Don't be hard on yourself. Keep an eye on your baby and don't beat yourself up.

I never dropped DS but he did nosedive off the sofa on my watch and fell down the stairs on DHs watch. It only takes a tiny lapse in concentration, we are all sleep deprived and we are all human.

I don't recall dropping DS, though my memory is shit (he's only 18 months!) but have definitely misjudged our combined width (when he's asleep in my arms) when walking through a doorway and banging his head on the door frame. Several times!

Actually I say I haven't dropped him but the one time he wasn't strapped into his pushchair, fell out of it straight onto the top of his head (like a headstand). We went to a&e for that one, just in case. So that was definitely my fault, so I sort of have dropped him.

Many of us have been there.
In my case I slipped on the bottom 2 stairs.
DD2 screamed immediately and I ran up the road in my bare feet to my neighbour who was a childminder with a first aid qualification!
DD2 is now nearly 13, taller than me (and I'm not short) and doing brilliantly at school (noticed a GCSE maths text in her bag the other day and she's Y7)

When I rang my dad in tears and confessed to this terrible crime, he cheerfully said he'd let me roll off the bed at the same age. Apparently I bounced.

He also pointed out that it never happens again. You learn from the experience.
