a sensible age for children to move from cot to bed?

My DH was looking at a Thoams the Tank bed earlier, which said it was suitable from 15 months plus. Now, our DS is 15 months old, but i think its far too early to move him out of his cot, even though this bed is touching the floor (not least because of the safety implications, but i have visions of him rolling out of bed to play with his toys at 3am then crashing out on the carpet). All opinions gratefully received.

moved my dd in to a cot bed at 19 months and she was fine. i waiting till i felt safe she could find our room and bed in middle of night with out going into a massive panic.

Point one * He will get out of bed at whatever age to play with his toys! Ds1 was in a cot until nearly 3 - he still did it. Just put them back in bed when you go up to go to bed yourself.

Point two * Unless he is climbing out, I would leave him in the cot for as long as he fits or until he is night trained!

Sensible also to make sure he can get downstairs safely, in case he decides to, IYSWIM

2 years..........My ds was 2.2 months old

SmileysPeople · 30/12/2006 22:23

My DS2 is still in his cot and he's 3and half! He does have a bed but he just loves his cot and always opts for that, says'it's so snuggly.'
DS1 was in the cot until nearly 3, and he only moved as DS2 arrived. He loved it too.
It's a good cot.(It's V old and sags in the middle, which I think makes them feel cocooned!)

ds2 was 2 n half and coped with it fine( think I was more worried bout it then he was!)

DS was 19 months and coped fine too. Had a bed rail on side (still has at 4) and always made sure the stair gate was closed when we went to bed so that when he got up to come into our room he didnt stumble down the stairs.

We moved our ds into a bed (a junior bed with a tiny rail which really only goes as far as the pillow) 10 days before his 3rd birthday. He coped very well with the move and I think was quite excited because he had/has Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine duvet sets (he's now 4)

I think it varies enormously and depends often on whether the cot is needed for baby number 2 or not, which it wasn't in my case so there was no rush and my son never once tried to climb out of his cot. He slept in a travel cot at 3.5 but now always sleeps in a bed or on an airbed on the floor if we go away.

16 months - once he could climb. Soooooooo much easier if he woke up as he would come to us, rather than wailing in his cot.

Once they can climb out of their cot is a good general guide. Both of mine were about 2 and half.

DD was 18 months and hated her cot. The transistion from cot to toddler bed was fine. No problems really.

Thanks for all the replies. I think i'll go with leaving him in his cot for the time being, and look to moving him once he starts climbing out! We don't need the cot (yet...), and he's growing up so fast in all respects that i'd like him to be a baby at night for a while yet
