Car seat?

My LO is 6.5m now & he is getting big for his current car seat (maxi cosi from birth)

Been advised my few people to just go for basic car seat (eg Baby start)

Any suggestions on which one?

He is incredibly young to be outrowing his infant seat. Is his head at the top of the seatback? This is when it is outgrown (or he goes over the max weight) rather than legs getting longer.

Rear facing is safest and advised til 15mo minimum so Id recommend googling Extended Rear Facing seats. Alsp have a look at the In Car Safety Centre. They can talk with you over the phone about which seats suit and can ship seats to you if you are too far to visit.

It amazes me that people think these 'basic' seats are safe. There was something a while ago that a man did an emergency stop and the harness broke and i thought you're surprised? They shouldn't be on sale in my opinion. It is almost unheard of for a 6m old to outgrow a group 0+ car seat are you sure? Have a look for a seat that rear faces till 18kg. If funds are low look at the joie seats. Tilt and steadi the cheapest but stages and everystage will last a lot longer and are very cheap for the amount of time you can use them. I agree call the in car safety centre they will give you much better advice than these people suggesting you use the least safe choice at the stage.

My DD is almost 9months, quite long and 19lbs and is still in her maxi cosi cabriofix, they are meant to go up to 15 months.dependent on whether the baby's head sits above the top of the head rest. Have you taken the insert out? I removed the insert at five months, gave her more room.

There is absolutely no way that a 6 month old should be outgrowing a car seat. My 7.5 month old is 99.3rd percentile height and the weight of a 50th percentile one year old and has loads of room. Their feet may be over the edge of the seat but of their head is below the top of the seat it is fine.

The britax first class plus is rear facing to 15kg, and an extremely reasonable price (under £100, IIRC). It's also suitable from birth if you did want to use it from now.

I was under the impression that first class plus was only RF until 13kg?

I wouldn't put him forward facing. He probably isn't outgrowing his car seat now, is his head at the very top?

RF is a lot safer than FF and the seats don't have to cost hundreds.

My DD hit 15kg at 3yo (she's been FF in it for a while due to the car we have) so it will last for a while - at least 2, I would have thought.

My oh bought a halfords one to replace the little carry one and it's dreadful I don't let ds sit in it at his head lols forwards in it when he sleeps, this is because the rear facing position doesn't tilt back far enough. Have a good look at some so you don't end up wasting money by buying something unsuitable first time

I spent days looking at car seats maybe even weeks and got the first class plus, he seems much more comfortable. I got mine from boots on half price sale and collected points on it too so think it's a right bargain. It is one sturdy seat. It turns out the seat I bought was the same price as his but his is not getting used (ever)

The sirona is fab, our DS is almost 18 months and still happy facing backwards in it, falls asleep almost immediately

OP I imagine your DS is like mine at that age. Not outgrown the seat 'officially' but he used to scream and screech the whole journey as he was uncomfortable being so scrunched and also not being able to sit up/see very much. I swapped to an erf joie seat at that age and DS still rear faces in it now at 20mo. It was suitable from birth but is much more roomy and upright than the infant carriers. He can rear face in it until 18kg and then forward face until outgrown so it definitely has life left in it.

My advice would be don't be swayed by height/weight limits on infant carriers and use your judgement. However, at that young age I would really go for something that rear faces for quite a lot longer.

What do you mean by basic car seat? I most certainly would not put a 6-month old baby in a forward facing seat.
And I would not go for a cheapest possible option either - I've seen a serious car crash where the baby was totally unharmed in his carseat. They are an important safety equipment, not just for decorative purposes.

However, I did move my own DD out of her infant carrier at 6 months of age and she's a lot happier. She went to an ERF, 0-18 seat.

If its a cabriofix, its suitable up to 1 year or 13kg, I absolutely wouldn't put a young baby in a forward facing.

There are extended rear facing upto around 18m, we have found kiddicare excellent for advice
