12 day old baby - need advice please.

Hi all,

We have a 12 day old boy and he is being formula fed. He was on aptimil first stage but always seemed hungry. Midwife said to change to cow and gate first milk as its richer so may make him feel fuller. We changed on Friday night and Saturday day he slept quite and a lot and last night from 9PM onwards he just cried, was restless, and would not settle at all.

Also, his bowel movements have changed. When we changed milk he had diarrhoea initially, then nothing for a while and then diarrhoea just now. E midwife said he maybe unsettled for a few days but didn't think it would be this bad.

Anyone have any ideas why the change in mood, unsettled etc last night Nd now tonight? Could it be the milk or something else? Growth spurt?

Changing milk can cause bowel changes for a while. Just make sure you're making it up properly aswell, with fresh boiled water and cool it down.. Don't pre make and store or use cool water

He's very small still

I would keep to a first stage milk, and offer little and often. I would be offering 3oz every 90mins during the day at his age. (2oz might be enough)

It's normal for newborns to have sloppy or watery stools. It's not diahorrea.

It's also normal for them to want feeding a lot, and it isn't necessarily a sign that there's a problem with the formula you're using.

Is he suffering with wind, do you think? Some babies really struggle with it.

Sometimes he holds himself up like he's trying to have a poo which he didn't seem to do on Aptimil. Can changing formula first milks cause him to be wingey and unsettled.

Last night he was having a bottle feed and crying nearly at the same time. We changed from Aptimal as he was never content. At one point he had 4oz a 30 min break and another 4oz!
