How many layers at night? 6mo

Ds is 6 mo. Our house can be quite cold. He has been wearing a vest, a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog sleeping bag. Sometimes has a blanket over his bottom half. I have just got a 3.5 tog bag with arms. I have put just a vest under it. Does this sound ok? It seems much puffier than his other bags, more quilt like and is 6-18months so quite big (although he is a a big, well long really, baby)

Got one of those cheapy room temperature cards which i don't know how accurate it is, its saying 15 atm. It will go up to 18 in an hour or two but then the heating goes off so it will drop back to 15. Very occasionally has been 12.

Does vest+ 3.5tog bag with sleeves sound ok compared to what he was in before?

Its been 7 years since DD wasa baby, but I seem to remember the rule of thumb was one layer more than you (an adult) would wear.
I think I'd put a sleepsuit on him too, under the sleeping bag. 15 or sometimes 12 seems very cold, any way you could keep the heating on a bit longer?

Thanks, he has fallen asleep and seems warm.enough. Really quite warm.actually! Its forecast to be milder tonight so don't think we will.see 12.

I am on a bit of a tight budget being on maternity leave (and wanting to not return to work.....) so trying to be frugal with the heating oil. We do keep it on if the bedroom temp drops.

Sorry cant link from.my phon bit the grobag site has a good chart that shows how manu layers they need in diff temps and diff tog bags.
But bear in mind diff babies are diff my ds always needed a layer less where dd always needed a layer more. You feel their body to check they are ok rather than feet and hands.

Both my kids happily play in 15 in a vest but we live in a colder climate than the UK.

We have tried so many different options with our 13mo DD. The house is so cold, even with heating on (normally around 14/15). Recently we've been putting a fan heater on so it goes up to 20, but then she wakes up with a dry cough.
Last night I tried no heater, and her normal vest+pajamas and her 2.5 grobag with a 1 tog grobag over that, she slept til 1.30ish without waking (good for her!)

I got some good second hand grobags from eBay.

That is very cold. But sounds like you're doing what you need to keep bee warm, what with the plenty of layers. You could buy some scratch mits as well to keep her hands warm if they're cold. You could also try hot water bottles, stick one in before u go to bed to keep her warm. My LOs room is around 20 degrees as we have the heating set at that through the night so it just stays warm, and I put her in a long sleeved vest, onsie and a 2.5 tog bag.

My 4-month-old wears a sleepsuit, a 1.5 grow-bag and a blanket doubled over. Bedroom is 19-23.

We found that a grow bag was nowhere near enough so now my DS wears vest, sleepsuit, 2.5 tog grow bag and quilt on top! He no longer wakes up freezing in the night. His room is cold though, probably goes down to similar temps in the night.

He felt very warm when we went to bed. Just checked the thermometer and it says 15 after no heating all night. His hands are cool but not cold. I've just changed his nalpy and he is toast inside the bag. He does wake quite a lot though.

I am more worried about him.overheating. But he does wake quite a lot. Well he stirs and wants feeding back to sleep. The weather is supposed to be milder from today so will keepnhim as he is and see if being warmer in milder weather helps.

It sounds a lot to me but I have the sweatiest/hottest baby/toddler in the world. At that age he would have had a sleep suit and a 2.5tog sleeping bag at this time of year and I have a 350yr old, draughty house and turn heating off at night. He now has a sleep suit and a light summer duvet. DH and I also have a summer duvet all year round though so maybe we are hot sleepers.

17 month old wear pyjamas and a 2.5 tog bag. Room varies between 17 and 20. Occasionally gets to 16. Last year when he was 5 months he was wearing a sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag. Gro-bag guidance is long sleeved vest and 2.5 tog bag so technically my boy is wearing a pair of trousers too much.

12 degrees sounds really low! Shivering at the thought lol. For our baby we don't let it get colder than 18 degrees... Optimum is 19-20 and we make sure it's like that through the night (programmed thermostat)

DS is 18months. He wears long sleeved vest, pjs and 2.5tog sleeping bag. Room between 17 and 21. He sleeps well so I assume he's happy with this.

Does he sleep well? If does then it can't be too cold for him. Though if he doesn't sleep well I suppose you don't know if it's he's cold, or hungry/teething/something else. So not much help.

I'd experiment and warm the room up if you can for a few nights and see if his sleeping changes. DS definitely has worse nights if it temp drops too low.
If he does sleep better is there a cheaper alternative to warm just his room? Some kind of portable heater or turn radiators off in other rooms and keep the radiator in the room he sleeps on?

When our house is that cold I've always done vest, sleepsuit, fleecy sleepsuit (NOT hooded) and grobag. All 5 of my DD's wake frequently if they aren't toasty warm.

Last night was horrendous for waking and despite eternal temperatures being quite a nite higher, inside seems cold still so will add a layer tonight and see how he is with that. Thanks all.
