Hi.
I have 9 week girl. She loves sucking and has found her fist but cant keep it in her mouth so gets cross. I give her a dummy at night and she self settles.she stirs in the night and starts sucking hands but cant settle bk without dummy. In day time she goes through times when she just wants to chill suckibg her dumny. If we are out and about she is fine without abd when we play shes ok with out it. Is this all normal.Another thing she does is spit it out if she wants attention.didnt no 9 week olds were so manipultive haha. Is this all normal? Thanks

Not sure what you think is manipulative? But yes, babies like to suck, that's normal.

UmbongoUnchained · 16/12/2015 21:48

How often does she feed in the night? A 9 week old sucking their hands are usually hungry. And no, she's not manipulative. She's a newborn.

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 21:52

I didnt mean it in a mean way. I was joking its funny how when i go out the room the dummy drops out as if she wants me to stay. She sucks her hands when shes just eaten sometimes and particularly when shes happy abd having fun. I just hope giving her a dummy other than at night is ok

What might not be normal? I can't tell what you're worried about from your OP? All sounds fine to me :)

Jesabel · 16/12/2015 22:02

Of course it's ok, have you never noticed any of the hundreds of thousands of other babies that have dummies?

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:03

I hate dummies and worry she will become to reliant on them if shevhas them to calm down in and day and night. I am hoping when she can play she will not need dummy in the day x

OP posts:
Jesabel · 16/12/2015 22:05

Why would you hate dummies Confused

VagueIdeas · 16/12/2015 22:09

Dummies are excellent, especially when babies are tired, grumpy, fraught, ill, teething... you name it. I would never deny my children the comfort a dummy gives/gave them. There's nothing to hate about them, and as for what random people out in public might think of me for giving my baby a dummy, well I don't care.

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:10

Because the cause ear problens and i worry about weanibg her off them. Also sshe cant put them bk in on her own so i spend time putting it bk in etc she loves them.Maybe its my issue

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:11

I dont worry what ppl i think. I just dont want her to have it when she doesnt need it in the day and it becomes habit

vichill · 16/12/2015 22:12

I haven't used them myself but expert dummy users I know have tended to use them sparingly in situations like car rides, in cafes or when just grizzling for no apparent reason. Tbh I wish mine had taken to them. Early months may have been a bit less fraught.

megletthesecond · 16/12/2015 22:14

Better a dummy than a thumb Wink. My 9yr old still sucks his.

At least you can bin a dummy at 2/3..

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:15

She doesnt have them in the car or pram and tends to spit it out if shes happy. If i am around to play etc she is generaally ok without unless shes tired.its when i go off to get something or do something she needs the comfort

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:17

You think? I was hoping she would find her thb as she sucks fists. But i sucked my thumb till 7 and it made my teeth weird. At least my thumb couldnt fall out my mouth though haha

I didn't know dummies caused ear problems?

Both of mine have/had dummies. My eldest weaned off it at just past 2 no problem. She only had them for sleep by that point, we simply took it away one night and never looked back. She did ask for it a couple of times but she also understood that she was a big girl and big girls don't need dummies. After a few days she forgot all about it. I understand it's not always this easy, but dummy weaning doesn't always have to be difficult either. I tend to go with a "I'll worry about it later" approach when it comes to weaning them off. They're not as bad as some people make them out to be provided they're used appropriately.

DiscoDiva70 · 16/12/2015 22:20

Both my children had dummies and they were a god send at times!
They both also gave them up quite easily very young when they believed that the 'dummy fairy' always collected dummies.

I've heard that some children tend to start sucking their thumb as a comforter, if they are never given dummies, and this would be a much harder habit for them to break

bittapitta · 16/12/2015 22:21

At nine weeks though how do you know she is not hungry? She should still be feeding overnight. Is she gaining weight okay? If she is then carry on, but she is newborn and wants to suck boob or bottle.

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:22

Did they have them more than just night when they were younger?

OP posts:
DiscoDiva70 · 16/12/2015 22:23

Yea mine had them whenever they wanted, no problem

SnowWhite26 · 16/12/2015 22:24

She doesnt take much at night now.i give her a dream feed at 10ish then she stirs at 2.30 but falls bk to sleep till 5-6

My DD has had hers from about a week old, but only had it for naps and nighttime sleep, she wasn't bothered about it when she was awake. But now she's 8mo and has learnt to pick it up and put it in her own mouth - so it's always in there whenever she fancies! I don't see it as a problem....

Rosenwyn1985 · 16/12/2015 23:51

My first born loved to suck and used them but had no trouble removing them. My second boy, now 16 weeks old, only uses them for comfort. Just as he dozes off at night then spits it out (and he's done this and slept through, 10-7 since 9 weeks old so not hungry). During the day if teething or a bit grumpy he likes it too. Other times, not fussed. He likes to hand suck and I'm actively encouraging dummies. Several people I know had kids who thumb suck and it's a lot worse!

SnowWhite26 · 17/12/2015 07:41

I dont no whatvtobdo. She stirred for 2 hrs last night between 2 and 4 and i had to put the dummy in 6 times. Im tempted to get rid off it.Or just give it to her to settle abd once it falls out she has to learn to settle on her own.dunno how long it would take her to forget it

OP posts:
bittapitta · 17/12/2015 07:47

...or feed her overnight? She is 9 weeks not 9 months.

UmbongoUnchained · 17/12/2015 08:10

Omg just feed your baby!!
