When do you reference your assignments?

I've just completed my assignment now (3000 words) and I have to go through it all now to reference it (I have all the information I need, just need to place it all in the text).
In previous assignments, I have placed the reference in as I write, but then I loose my train of thought

SO, when you do reference your work?

Thanks

I would write my sentence and then do the (iPod 2006), then go to another file in word and typoe the "iPod, 2006, Refrencing, mumsnet, publisher." type thing as I went along

Or before I started if I knew for definate I was going to use a paper I would type up the reference list befor I started or after.

So, how are you referencing if you are going back over it after you have written it - If I had paraphrased or quoted something I just did (ipod 2006) as I was writting/ reading the paper at the time. or do you mean just writting the big list of references?

people at Uni always said they were "doing their references" but I could never understand how or what they were doing as I found it flowd as part of each sentance.

Hiya,
I know what books I have used (they are all infront of me now, as I am meant to be doing the referencing now!), and all the pages etc are highlighted. Where there was a quote, I do write the reference in, but thats it really!

I know the way you say it makes much more sense, I used to do that, but often lost my train of thought iyswim.

Yeah, its a pai - but worth doing as one of my housemates failed his degree because he hadn't referenced his dissertation properly and it read like a copy of the textbook!!

Depends on how you need to reference you work. Do you need to harvard reference, if so then like how ipod has said, then make sure to put it in full in a bibliography at the back of the assignment. I usually do this as i work, find it easier than having to trawl through it all and add it all at the end! If it's an appendix then i write (appendix ....) finish the assignmet, sort and arrange the appendices and go back and write in (appendix 1) etc to finish it.
Currently referencing my work for a presentation for later today (3pm) - left it to the last minute as usual! Bed looks soooooo comfortable right now!!!
